Sim: Vote for BN candidates

KUCHING: Sarawakians must vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates to protect their interests in Parliament and to ensure that their rights are not taken away. Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Stampin, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said if the opposition members were strong in parliament, they would pass new laws to override Sarawak’s interests.

“So Sarawakians must protect their interests through the Parliament,” Sim told a press conference at SUPP Batu Kawa Branch Office at MJC New Township here yesterday.

According to the Minister for Local Government and Housing, Petronas alone is one example. “Land taxes in Sarawak amount to RM400 million a year in the form of stamp duties. So you can see how much money is involved. “What we are saying is that opposition always say we are sleeping.

“Go and look at the debates on the Territorial Sea Act 2012 in Parliament. I did not see from the hansard a single DAP MP debating or voting against the Bill. And some of these MPs are still contesting,” Sim said. He added: “I was not an MP at that time and the opposition said I supported GST. “As far as we are concerned, DAP said we are puppets of Umno.

So I want to tell Sarawak DAP that it is the puppet of DAP in West Malaysia. Because Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) dared to vote against the Bill (RU355) in Parliament, that Bill was never brought up for the second reading. Why? Because BN Sarawak under Tok Nan’s (the late Chief Minister’s) chairmanship had instructed all the MPs not to cooperate on the Bill. If Sarawak BN voted against the Bill, are we puppet? You go and ask DAP.

“ Sim, who is SUPP President, is facing Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chairman and Pakatan Harapan Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen in a straight fight in Stampin. Stampin, which covers Kota Sentosa, Batu Kitang and Batu Kawah State Constituencies, has a total of 66,240 voters.

KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian feels that he is the underdog in the battle for the Stampin parliamentary seat, but is confident of ‘narrowing the gap’ come polling day on May 9.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate is involved in a straight fight with Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen in what is expected to be a close battle between two party chiefs.
“If everybody works hard and is not misled (by the opposition) and looks at (every battle) rationally, I believe that even if I’m the underdog, we can narrow the gap over the (next) 11 days,” he said after being announced as the candidate for Stampin.
Dr Sim, who is Local Government and Housing Minister, appealed to Stampin voters to look at the work that BN-SUPP had put in for Batu Kawah and Batu Kitang state constituencies over the last two years.
“Give me a chance to fight for not just for Stampin alone, but for Sarawak in general,” he said, adding that he had been working hard regardless of whether it was election time or not.
This is Dr Sim’s first time contesting in a parliamentary election, having twice contested in the state polls. He first stood in the 2011 state election in Pending but was defeated by DAP’s Violet Yong, who polled 14,375 votes for a 7,595-majority.
In 2016, Dr Sim contested in Batu Kawah and beat DAP incumbent Christina Chiew in a three-cornered fight that also involved Independent candidate Liu Thian Leong.
He polled 6,414 votes against Chiew’s 4,329 and Liu’s 1,109, to win by a majority of 2,085.
The three state seats under Stampin are Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawah and Batu Kitang.
Chong is a three-term assemblyman for Kota Sentosa, while BN-SUPP’s Lo Khere Chiang is the Batu Kitang assemblyman.
Stampin has a total of 66,240 registered voters.

Dr Sim (seated front row third right) and Lo (seated front row, fifth left) are listening to a talk by a fellow party member with the audience.
KUCHING: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has pointed out that the Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak is not similar to their counterparts in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
This was because BN Sarawak will never let any other BN component parties based outside of Sarawak to come in to the state.
According to the party members who spoke during a ceramah held at Emart Batu Kawa area, only Sarawakian parties can fight for the rights of Sarawakians and SUPP is one of them.
Hundreds showed up to attend the political talk here last night.
During the event, a few of the party members including BN candidate for Stampin Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian gave talks on the importance of voting for BN Sarawak.
“Although we (SUPP) are the same BN coalition, we are purely interested in the rights of Sarawakians. We assure Sarawakians that we are ourselves and we wont let (other BN component) parties based outside of Sarawak take over this state as long as we are around,” added Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
Dr Sim on the other hand pointed out that how much that Sarawak will lose the power to fight for their rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 with the federal government if they do not vote for SUPP or Sarawak BN.
Apart from that, he also reminded those present to realise that BN Sarawak has done a lot of development for the people and that the opposition is nothing but talk.
“The opposition only know how to look only (tengok  sahaja) and do nothing. How can they serve the people if they are all talk but no action?” said Dr Sim.
Also present during the event were SUPP Kota Sentosa branch chairman Wilfred Yap, Youth Central chairman Michael Tiang and others.

KUCHING: School leavers including Chinese attempting to enter public universities or colleges need to head down to the Education Roadshow 2018 being set up at MJC Batu Kawah now as a special fast track lane has been opened and promised placements for Sarawakians for today only.
The special roadshow initiated by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is brought here and Sarawak for the very first time to give the best of opportunities to Sarawakian children, especially those who have missed the boat to secure placement in public higher education institutions previously, to further their studies.
The event Main Committee chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar pointed out that 20 universities and colleges have promised 200 places each for Sarawakians.
“This is a special fast track lane for Sarawak children. So everyone who come and apply today basically can be guaranteed a place in university or college if you have achieved expected grades and meet the conditions of the offer,” he addressed the opening ceremony of the roadshow.
The roadshow, he added, is brought here to ensure Sarawak school leavers are not dropped or left out from opportunity to pursue higher education.
Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Stampin, was delighted to spread this good news especially to Chinese students and parents.
“Last time, this type of programme was targeted at Bumiputera children but this time it is specially designed and even the Chinese children are given the opportunity,” he said.
“So every SPM and STPM school leavers here today would be given a place in higher education institution provided you are not choosy and meet the offer criteria,” he added.
The programme, he shared, has allowed 100,000 students since 2016 to be able to receive and afford a tertiary education at both public and private local universities as well as technical institutions.
“So don’t miss this chance to enjoy the fast track special lane to pursue your dreams and change your destiny and achieve a better future for you and country,” he urged.
All school leavers and potential candidates visiting the roadshow have been reminded to bring all important documents which are necessary to ensure smooth application process.

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Stampin parliamentary seat Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian announced and launched his manifesto at the operation centre in MJC Batu Kawah here.
He said the plan is for five years, and that winning a parliamentary seat is equivalent to two engines, unlike the state seat which is only one engine.
By having more engines, Dr Sim said there will be more that can be done for the people in terms of development, allocation and others.
“We need to make sure we win. Then we can get back our rights in MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963) and take back part of Petronas,” he told a press conference today.
He added that this election is not just for Stampin, but for the whole of Sarawak.
“We’re the underdog because this (seat) was previously under DAP. We want to win so that the people in Stampin can see the difference (between) under us and DAP.”
Dr Sim’s manifesto are affordable housing/education, boost economic activities, flood mitigation and drainage, community and traffic as well as roads.

Jelajah Pendidikan 2018 offers school leavers
100 per cent placement at local higher learning
institutions.

April 29, 2018

KUCHING, April 29: Batu Kawah assemblyman Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian urged SPM and STPM school leavers to take advantage of the 100 per cent higher learning placement by the Jelajah Pendidikan 2018 programme.

The programme, organised by Yayasan Destini Anak Bangsa (YDAB), in previous years was only held in the Peninsula and only for Bumiputera school leavers.

But this year, as the federal government realised the importance of education in the development of the country, the programme is now open to school leavers of all races and for the first time in Sarawak.

“The Sarawak government has always been trying its best to provide opportunities to all Sarawakians regardless of their race and religion. So after our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg requested that this programme to be brought to Sarawak, it is finally here this year.

“Previously only open to Bumiputera, now students of all races can participate. Higher learning placement under the Education Ministry’s centralised university unit (UPU) now even recognises the Chinese schools’ Unified Examination Certificate (UEC),” Dr Sim told hundreds of students and civil service participants at the programme’s opening ceremony at MJC Batu Kawah here this morning.

He said this programme was especially for those who had missed the chance to apply to higher learning institutions in the country due to strict requirements or lack of slots for placements as the programme’s organising chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar had given assurance that as long as students were not picky, they would be guaranteed placements in local higher learning institutions be it public or private.

Meanwhile, Sahol said 20 local universities would be providing 200 placements each for applicants applying through this programme.

He said this is a ‘special path’ provided by YDAB thanks to the Education Ministry, where students would not be hindered by endless red tape, as long as they qualify academically.

“Previously, about 65,000 students have been placed all over the country under this programme. This year we have extended this programme to Sarawak to ensure that no Sarawakian students are misplaced,” said Sahol.

He pointed out that not all students would be qualified to be placed in universities, but they could be placed at Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions.
“Do not be picky. Even vocational students can work and earn high income. According to statistics, more than 90 per cent of TVET graduates are guaranteed employment upon finishing their studies,” said Sahol.

He said Sarawak in its journey to become a developed state would need much technical and vocational expertise to implement its development projects.

According to a release from the organisers, Jelajah Pendidikan 2018 which began in MJC Batu Kawa this morning will move to Dewan Hikmah in Petra Jaya tomorrow, and Miri Indoor Stadium on May 1. — DayakDaily

peruntukan

April 29, 2018: DayakDaily

— DayakDaily

Party chiefs to battle it out in Stampin

Party chiefs to battle it out in Stampin

Dr Sim (left) shakes hands with Chong after the announcement.
KUCHING: It’s a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Chinese-majority Stampin parliamentary constituency.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian is taking on DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who is a three-term (2004, 2008 and 2013 general elections) MP for Bandar Kuching.
Returning officer Elizabeth Loh announced the candidacy at Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) at 11.15am today.
Dr Sim, 52, a cardiolgist, was first elected as the Batu Kawah assemblyman in the 2016 state election and is Local Government and Housing Minister while Chong, 47, a lawyer, is a three-term (2006, 2011 and 2016 state elections) Kota Sentosa assemblyman.
Both Batu Kawah and Kota Sentosa state seats fall under the Stampin parliamentary constituency. The other state seat that also comes under Stampin is Batu Kitang, which is presently held by BN-SUPP Lo Khere Chiang.
BN-SUPP lost Stampin to the DAP for the first time in the last general election when then Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng, who is a five-term MP for the seat, was defeated by DAP’s greenhorn Julian Tan by a whopping 18,670 vote-majority in a three-cornered battle that also involved STAR’s Lina Soo.
Prior to the nomination from 9am, traffic began backing up outside Kota Padawan as early as 7.30am as supporters packed into the commercial areas and coffee shops adjacent to MPP.
In bee territory, the ground that isn’t already grass is made up of splashes of BN blue and SUPP yellow. The hive certainly made a showing.
Over in rocket territory, it was a bit more sedated. Supporters filled a kopitiam and the area outside it as familiar faces including the incumbent for Stampin Julian Tan.
Supporters from both sides flocked with to the gates of MPP before releasing them to the hands of Election Commision (EC).

Wan Habeed (second left) hands over the RMR1M qualification certificate to Diana, while Dr Sim (third left) and others look on.
KUCHING: Families in Desa Wira are encouraged to apply for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat 1 Malaysia (RMR1M) scheme.
Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the scheme is the best opportunity for the low and medium-income group in the area to own a decent home.
He said all the applicants need is to have a site for the house and a stable income.
“I believe there are still many people in Desa Wira who hold the Temporary Occupational Licence (TOL), which qualify them to apply for RMR1M,” he said at the presentation of the qualification certificate to Diana Labung at Desa Wira here yesterday.
Dr Sim, who is Batu Kawa assemblyman and BN’s nominee for the Stampin parliamentary constituency, said TOL holders could apply for financial assistance from Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) through the state government to build the RMR1M houses.
The RMR1M scheme is funded by the federal government through SPNB to provide affordable quality homes for Malaysians in line with the government’s national housing objectives.
Dr Sim said Sarawak’s quota for RMR1M this year is 1,000 units of which only 170 have been approved.
He said five RMRIM houses have so far been completed in the whole of Stampin constituency, adding that each house cost about RM68,000.
RMR1M is a single-storey house with three bed rooms.
If the house owners have money, they can make extension to the house.
Head of SPNB Sarawak branch Wan Habeeb Alli and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang were also present at the event.

Rain no deterrence for SUPP supporters to attend talk

Rain no deterrence for SUPP supporters to attend talk

A section of the crowd listen to Dr Sim’s speech.
KUCHING: The torrential rain on Wednesday night did not deter the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) supporters from having a fun time at the site of a political talk in RPP Batu Kawah.
While the crowd sought shelter nearby and killed time with several rousing rounds of zumba and poco-poco, the crew dismantled the screen from the original outdoor setup and reassembled it to somewhere drier.
When SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian finally took to the makeshift stage, the passionate delivery of his message was only matched by the people who were assigned the whistles that effectively deafened everyone nearby with their enthusiasm.
Apart from rolling out facts and figures of BN development programmes and projects in Sarawak, Dr Sim also stressed a lot on restoration of the state’s rights.
“Come May 9, we want to win big so that we can take back our rights,” he said.
He also mentioned the name of former chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, drawing a lot of reaction from supporters who clearly still hold the late CM and his contributions in high regard.
“If you look around Batu Kawah now and compare it to five years ago, is there a difference?” asked Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman.
Upon receiving a chorus of ‘yes’, he said the new developments was the best he could do with ‘one engine’.
“If I win the parliamentary seat, I’ll have two engines, like a Boeing aircraft. The allocation will be double.”
Dr Sim also raised a point about their mascots, saying that while bees are small, there are many of them.
“If you bother a bee hive, all the bees will come out and get you.”
SUPP assistant publicity and information secretary Lo Khere Chiang, its public complaints bureau chief Wilfred Yap and other SUPP leaders were also present.

Dr Sim wants clean fight with Chong in Stampin

Dr Sim wants clean fight with Chong in Stampin

Dr Sim addresses reporters at PBB headquarters.
KUCHING: Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who has been named to run for Stampin parliamentary seat, wants a straight and good fight against Chong Chieng Jen from Democratic Action Party (DAP) this 14th general election (GE14).
Chong, who is the three-term incumbent of Bandar Kuching, had on Monday night announced the decision to contest in Stampin while making room for his special assistant Dr Kelvin Yii to defend Bandar Kuching seat for DAP.
Thus, Bandar Kuching will be seeing two new faces – Dr Yii against SUPP women chief Kho Teck Wan.
Commenting on his chance in Stampin, Dr Sim recognised that it will be a tough battle and called for a good and clean fight.
“I am very disappointed with DAP for playing dirty tactics by going around spreading lies that we (SUPP) are giving out money to voters and even laughing at my short legs,” he told reporters yesterday.
“This is how they (opposition) mislead the people to not vote for BN if they don’t get their money. We don’t do that. I have urged voters in Batu Kawah to lodge police report if they encounter such thing because this is a serious crime,” he added.
He was met after Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled the Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak line-up for GE14 at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters at Jalan Bako here.
Asked on his confidence in facing Chong, Dr Sim said he will let the voters see and judge for themselves what he as the elected representative has done for Batu Kawah constituency in the past two years as well as in voicing issues that mattered to Sarawak in Parliament as a senator.
“They also know what’s coming for the area in the next three years; how we are being sincere in our actions and have walked the talk instead of (being) ‘hao siao’ (nonsense in Hokkien),” he pointed out.
“In Parliament, I have mentioned numerous times about why Sarawak has no chief of justice or IGP even after 55 years of independence and how come not one third of parliamentarians are from Sarawak, which is contradictory to the original spirit (of the Constitution),” he emphasised.
“Let people judge. I believe all my life that I have been serving and fighting for Sarawak since coming back from Australia,” he added, while urging people to give him a chance to prove his point.
He thus called on the opposition not to resort to dirty tactics, create hatred and mislead the public while reminding them that Sarawak does not need such leaders.
“We don’t want cheap actions which is called publicity stunts. Don’t fall into cheap publicity like in 2011 when the people were asked not to vote for me to keep me in the hospital because I am a good doctor,” he said.
Dr Sim reasoned that he can save more people when he is in public office, for instance through getting allocations to improve healthcare services in rural Sarawak, than just being a doctor who can only save one life at a time.
Meanwhile, Dr Sim has stepped down as senator to contest in GE14, thus opening an opportunity for others in BN to be in the Dewan Negara.
SUPP, he acknowledged, has many good candidates who have potential to become capable and good leaders.
“I want to assure them that there will be opportunity coming up very soon because I have resigned as senator immediately, especially the capable ones who can fight for Sarawak in Parliament” he said.
“Similarly as (party) president, I am only allowed three terms and this is the beginning of my fifth year. We need a continuation of leadership,” he added, and emphasised the need to train and expose young leaders to succeed him in due time.
SUPP, he assured, will focus on training young leaders after the election to prepare them to take up greater roles in the party, including taking over as president as well as in steering the state and nation forward.
“But now we want to focus on winning this election first and we will actively train young people to prepare them as fast as possible as they may still be lacking in certain aspects. If they are not ready and we put them there, they will be in trouble,” he said.
“In politics, you need a lot of wisdom, ability to think critically and being analytical and not simply put an inexperienced person there that can lead to their downfall,” he continued.
“I only have a few more years to complete my mission. Time is a factor for me. This is the last part of my service to contribute to Sarawak,” he added.
GE14, he reiterated, is not just an election on Stampin or Miri but a fight to ensure the interests and rights of Sarawak and its people are safeguarded and returned in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
To a question, Dr Sim dismissed the possibility of United People’s Party (UPP) candidates making a ‘u-turn’ after the election as had happened in the past state election because their partnership had been sealed with an agreement.
