KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has identified Mile 3 and Kota Sentosa as among highly populated areas which require a paid parking system.
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the council would not include all the over 2,000 parking bays under the proposed system.
“If the public want it, then there is a good reason to impose it. If the public do not mind the congestion, then we should not impose it. To me, we do this for the good of the public,” he told reporters yesterday.
The Batu Kitang assemblyman said many in Mile 3 and Kota Sentosa were in favour of a paid parking system because there is a shortage of parking spaces during certain hours.
Citing Mile 3 as an example, he said many motorists could not find a parking bay, particularly in the morning, with a similar situation in Kota Sentosa.
“So maybe we do it (impose parking fees) in the morning only. Even if we have the parking system, we will only use it where it is necessary,” he said.
Lo stressed that the objective of the proposed parking system is not to make money for MPP but “to reduce congestion in highly populated areas”.
He added the proposed paid system could use coupons similar to Kuching South City Council and Kuching North City Commission.
“Or it can be electronic. We need a good system, a common system and perhaps not so common. We need one system that can work for three councils and Kuching City Parking System can be one of them.
“But it is also possible for MPP to have a whole new system because many companies have come to see us,” he said.
Lo said MPP is conducting administrative work to prepare for the system.
“Gazetting the carparks is ongoing. A lot of procedures need to be done,” he said.
