KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) assistant publicity and information secretary Lo Khere Chiang has welcomed the recent statements of SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and United People’s Party (UPP) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh as positive signs that could pave the way for reconciliation between the two parties.
However, Lo said “some things cannot be forced” and likened reconciliation between SUPP and UPP to courtship and marriage, pointing out that no couple could get engaged or married overnight.
“The fact that both leaders can say that they want to reconcile is good. That’s because the people want it,” he told reporters yesterday.
The Batu Kitang assemblyman and Padawan Municipal Council chairman said it was “very noble” of Wong to suggest that UPP and SUPP come together as one.
“I think that is a good start, in politics everything is volatile and anything can happen. It will be good that we can all come together because we shall put Sarawak first and personal considerations last. All of us, whether the Chinese community or the Iban community, SUPP or UPP, or even PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu) and BN should put Sarawak first. We must be united where Sarawak is concerned,” he stressed.
Lo added he believed the Tanjong Datu by-election scheduled for Feb 18 would “show everybody that in Sarawak, we are all united”.
Recently, both Dr Sim and Wong have openly indicated that they are ready to mend fences.
However, neither has announced a date to discuss the issue.
Prior to last year’s state election, former Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had made several calls for SUPP and UPP to reconcile.
