KUCHING: The state and federal governments will assist St Ann’s Catholic Church in Kota Padawan financially with its building project this year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made the pledge before a 3,000-strong crowd consisting mostly of local parishioners at the project site on Thursday.
“His grace, Archbishop Datuk John Ha in his opening speech mentioned that I should consider your request not only favourably but generously. I don’t know exactly what he means and what his expectations are, but let me say this to you, I will discuss with your Chief Minister
(Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg) so both the federal government and state government of Sarawak will donate generously to this church,” he said.
“Let me tell you later the amount to give. We will definitely tell you the amount and I hope with this donation, St Ann’s Church will be completed by this year.”
Construction of the new St Ann’s Catholic Church began on Sept 17, 2014. The current first phase scheduled for completion in April involves building a proper and conducive place of worship.
There will be two other phases and the estimated cost for the whole project is RM19.2 million. To date the building fund is still short of RM8.9 million.
Ha said the new church building is necessary as the existing St Ann’s Church is no longer able to accommodate the over 2,000 congregation members.
