KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will be holding a two-day EatUp event at Emart Batu Kawa from March 17.
The event will involve some 50 volunteers, mostly culinary students from UCSI Sarawak Campus.
MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said the objective of the EatUp is to educate the public on not discarding certain food types as waste and to raise awareness among the youth of how food waste can lead to environmental destruction.
He said they expect about 1,000 people to participate in the event.
According to him, meals provided to the visitors during the event would be prepared mostly with grade B fruits or vegetable ingredients, rejected by the market due to their unattractive and unsatisfactory appearance and size.
“Normally, these kinds of fruits or vegetables are difficult to sell and are categorised as grade B materials.
“As such, most B grade food ingredients will be wasted and discharged directly or indirectly as waste because they have little market value,” he said after chairing the MPP full council meeting here yesterday.
He, however, believes that the fresh grade B fruits and vegetables have sufficient nutrients just like those categorised as grade A.
The event is organised in collaboration with Worming Up, a group of passionate young graduates from Unimas.
Worming Up was founded and launched in 2015 with the aim of bringing an end to food wastage.
