The 3rd Mile Market is the first to adopt the cashless Maybank QRPay service.
KUCHING: Members of the public can now pay for their groceries at 3rd Mile Market here simply by scanning a quick response (QR) code with their smartphones.
Through the convenient and seamless nature of Maybank QRPay, this new digital initiative by the bank allows customers to instantly pay for products and services while merchants will benefit from cashless transactions.
Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian likened the Maybank QRPay to be similar to that of Alipay, China’s leading third-party online payment platform.
“In China, you can basically leave your house without your wallet but you cannot leave without your smartphone.
“Our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has been stressing on digital economy and we are very pleased that the 3rd Mile Market here now features a cashless payment system with Maybank QRPay so customers can pay for their purchase even if it’s only RM1,” he told reporters after visiting the market today to view how the public and merchants adapted to this new service.
He pointed out that there were enormous advantages of cashless payment not only for the customers and sellers but also the government.
“For sellers, they don’t have to worry about having to make change or getting counterfeit money while customers will not have to worry about losing their money and they will have a record on what they have purchased.
“On the other hand, the advantage of cashless payment for the government is that they do not have to spend so much on producing and replacing old bank notes which have gone through wear and tear,” he explained.
The 3rd Mile Market is the first to adopt Maybank QRPay in the state and for a start, three sellers at the market are now able to accept payments through the system.
“It is up to the sellers whether or not they want to adopt the Maybank QRPay as a form of payment for customers. But we would like to encourage merchants and customers to adapt themselves to electronic payment solutions so that we can be like China,” advised Dr Sim.
He also commended Maybank and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) of which the 3rd Mile Market is under its jurisdiction for taking the initiative to implement the e-payment solution.
Also present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also MPP chairman, and MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.
