Rep concerned about rampant illegal dumping

Lo Khere Chiang (left) and SUPP Youth publicity and information secretary Milton Foo see for themselves the illegal dumping site.

KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang took time to see for himself an illegal dumping site at Stampin Resettlement Scheme here yesterday, hoping to bring more awareness among the public about the dangers of illegal dumping.

Illegal dumping sites are already an eye sore, yet at this particular site, the dumping area is the drain. Not only is the dumped rubbish unsightly, the drainage system will be affected; it will cause another bigger issue of drain blockage, said Lo when contacted.

“I hope to get public cooperation to report illegal dumping to our councillors or the authorities. We sincerely invite the public to be with us on the war against illegal rubbish dumping and to safeguard the cleanliness of our city.”

He added that the people would suffer if the problem was not dealt with immediately.

Residents could always call Trienekens’ hotline 082-612300 to collect their bulk waste at a minimal fee, he said.

“We need the community to help in influencing the people to have the correct mind-set to keep Sarawak clean and hygienic. Illegal dumping will only cause massive health and environmental issues,” Lo said.

When making reports, it would be helpful to furnish the date, time and location of the incident (illegal dumping) as well as the registration number of the vehicle used to carry the waste. Any photos or videos that can provide leads for the authorities to investigate are also welcome, he said.

Under Section 18(3) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness By-Laws, 1999), those caught doing illegal dumping could be fined not more than RM1,000 for the first offence and RM2,000 for the second offence or a jail term of not more than six months or both.

KOTA PADAWAN: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has received a ‘Letter of Appreciation’ from the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing for its contribution and excellent achievement in carrying out the 1AZAM Programme.

“I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah. It is an encouragement letter. She acknowledged the fact that we have done well.

“It is not every day that you receive compliment from people, from ministers and from authorities, that is why I would like to highlight this one,” MPP chairman, Cr. Lo Khere Chiang told reporters at a press conference after MPP Full Council Meeting here, yesterday.

Lo added that it was not only just an encouragement for those in MPP, but he looked at it as an encouragement to other councils to do well, too.

“We have excelled in certain areas and this is an area where we have done well and that is why we have been acknowledged,” he said.

The 1AZAM Programme which MPP carried out in 2015 as part of its Social Corporate Responsibility, (SCR) involved three categories, namely AZAM Niaga Kiosk, AZAM Niaga Runcit and AZAM Potong Ramput.

The AZAM Niaga Kiosk involved two participants, AZAM Niaga Runcit involved six participants while the AZAM Potong Rumput involved three participants.

The KPI set by the Ministry was 10 participants but MPP managed to get 11 participants.

“We not only have to identify the participants but also have to monitor them,” Lo said.

Lo added that the 1AZAM programme which MPP has been involved in over the past five years is an on-going programme.

MPP appeals to owners to neuter pets

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has appealed to pet owners to neuter their animals.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said this is to help reduce the number of strays.

Lo pointed out MPP is now facing a problem with stray dogs and cats after the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) limited the intake of strays at its shelter to 15 per month.

“So I appeal to pet owners to help us to neuter their pets to help us address the problem,” Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, told reporters yesterday after chairing a full council meeting.

Lo added that SSPCA has also increased its fees from RM30 to RM90 per head.

“This is really a problem to us and once again I appeal for the cooperation of pet owners,” he said, noting that stray dogs and cats were often found roaming in markets and along roads under the council’s jurisdiction.

MPP allocated RM30 mln for flood mitigation projects

Lo Khere Chiang holds up the letter of appreciation during a photo call.

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been allocated RM30 million for flood mitigation projects.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the amount was approved by the Ministry of Local Government under Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“Most of the projects will be carried out in major areas like Batu Kitang and Batu Kawah,” he told reporters yesterday after chairing a full council meeting.

Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, said Padawan flyover projects would be carried out as scheduled at Kuching Sentral and Mile 4 1/2 in August.

Meanwhile, he said the council has received a letter of appreciation from the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing acknowledging MPP’s efforts in helping to carry out the 1Azam programme.

He said MPP currently runs the programme in three categories – kiosk, grass cutting and retail shops – in villages involving 11 participants.

“The letter means a lot to us and will motivate us,” he said, adding that the programme will continue this year.

Mandulkan anjing, kucing elak biak tanpa kawalan

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Mandulkan anjing, kucing elak biak tanpa kawalan

Utusan, Borneo Online: 2017-04-27

KUCHING: Various activities were carried out at the (PERKATA) special school recently for the children there.

Organised by Global Design Studio, an active community network comprising students, graduates and interdisciplinary academic creative personnel from Curtin University’s school of Built Environment, (SoBE) in Bentley, Western Australia, the programme seeks to enhance student learning experiences through international community collaboration across three phases undertaken this year.

The team of 24 students and industry experts took to the 14-day road trip travelling to Sarawak and one of the activities was to share a day of joy with the special school children.

Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang who officiated at the occasion said it was a good gesture for the Global Design Studio to think of the children with special needs.

He said charity in the hearts is a good moral support for such people. Lo hoped that other organisations would also spend time with such children or at the Old folks’ home to bring cheers to their lives.

The day’s activities included art painting, fabric paper roll, puppet making, origami, hand painting and musicial activities.

GDS students create Play Wonderland for SCCS

The students preparing their transformation works at the SCCS activity room.

KUCHING: The Global Design Studio (GDS) Programme comprising students of Curtin University’s School of Built Environment (SoBE), Australia visited the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) centre here yesterday.

The delegation comprising 24 master’s students, two industry experts Triet Le (Vietnam) and Alejandro Gil (Spain), project facilitator Chris Leong and SoBE Construction Management academic staff Dr Emil Jonescu, was led by Fellow of Curtin Academy and GDS co-founder Associate Professor Khoa Do helped to transform SCCS’s activity room.

The aim was to provide the children the chance to re-imagine the existing playroom and to create a ‘Play Wonderland’ which includes different zones for activities such as music, arts and crafts, a mini library, playground and toddler’s corner.

The team was also visited by SCCS advisor Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang in support of the team’s approach to community interactions and sharing of experiences and culture.

“The team hopes that the children will be excited when they see the new space for the first time. We just want to continue to facilitate the connection between our students and our community,” Khoa told reporters at the SCCS centre here.

According to him, this is the second phase of the mobility programme SarAWAKEN on the Road — a 14-day (from April 9–21) road trip travelling along the coast of Sarawak from Miri to Kuching with key community engagements, space activation activities and social interactions. It also seeks to enhance students’ learning experiences through international community collaboration.

The first phase was the SarAWAKEN ‘think tank’ from Jan 30 to Feb 18 — a 19-day study tour which focused on five key local themes relating to community narratives and Sarawak’s potential future.

Commenting further on the event, he noted that the programme also provides students with a learning experience beyond classroom projects by taking the learning outside of the classroom and getting the students out of their comfort zones by going out into the community.

He said throughout the trip, the students had engaged with various primary and secondary schools such as SMK St Columbia (Miri), Kai Dee Middle School (Bintulu) and a series of pop-up activities ranging from dance, Urban Camera, and Sketching at Parkcity Mall in Bintulu.

The group then undertook similar activities which included community participation in fabric-painting, bandana-making and sharing of knowledge and experiences with the locals at Sibu Jaya markets.

While in Kuching, the group participated in the recent PechaKucha Night, collaborated with local artists 9lives and Haus to design and paint a mural at SMK Kuching High School and discussed opportunities of future collaboration with the principal to create a spatial library. The visit also included urban sketching with the community, and visits to Perkata Special School and SJK Chung Hua Sungai Buda to create a mobile library and mural art.

Sarawak to Zakir Naik: You’re not welcome

 | April 19, 2017

Local leaders say the contentious preacher is not suitable for Sarawak’s unique communal make-up.
James-Jemut-Masing-zakirnaikKUCHING: Leaders from both sides of the political divide in Sarawak do not want controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who is sought by India for alleged money-laundering investigations, in the multi-religious state.

Deputy Chief Minister James Jemut Masing said Naik’s permanent residence (PR) issued by the federal government five years ago would not shield him from having his movements in Malaysia restricted.

“The PR doesn’t make Naik immune to being banned as an unwanted person. We have banned Malaysian legislators from (entering) Sarawak before,” he said.

Naik has yet to be officially banned from entering Sarawak, which has autonomous power in immigration matters.

The state has a unique demographic make-up, with Christians forming the majority and Muslims comprising less than a quarter of the population.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) supreme council member Idris Buang said the state’s “political setting” would not be welcoming for Naik.

“Personally, I think he is one of the best Muslim scholars out there. For many Muslims, he has done a good job explaining the teachings of Islam. He is a preacher of peace.

“However, he would not be well understood in a place like Sarawak. So my advice is for him to spare Sarawak his presence,” Idris said.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, from Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), said it was in the state’s interest to block individuals who are detrimental to the peace.

“We are Sarawakians and we will always remember what our late Tok Nan (former chief minister Adenan Satem) said: no extremists and religious bigots, please!” said Lo.

“He may have PR but Sarawak will not welcome political or religious extremists, the likes of Zakir Naik, to step foot here.”

Meanwhile, state PKR leader Baru Bian said Naik should not only be banned from Sarawak, but deported or charged by Malaysian authorities.

“How can we be harbouring someone who is wanted elsewhere? And not only that, we have given him PR status.

“He has been creating disharmony, making sensitive statements that have affected our multi-religious society in Malaysia. That itself should be grounds to deport him or charge him.

“This kind of person should not be allowed to stay in Malaysia.

“If they are serious about creating a harmonious situation in Malaysia, he should be deported back to India.

“Our leaders must make an example out of him. Otherwise, they are not walking the talk,” Baru said.
Naik’s PR was confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday.

On April 15, India’s Enforcement Directorate filed a charge sheet against Naik’s company Harmony Media Ltd and his colleague Aamir Gazdar for alleged money-laundering.

The country’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also reported to be seeking an Interpol “Red Notice” to bring Naik back to India to face questioning.
