MPP to use Marris Fund to repair broken drain covers — Chairman

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will carry out repairs on a number of broken drain covers in front of shops in Desa Wira, following complaints from shop owners and members of the public.

Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said they would use Malaysian Roads Records Information System (Marris) Fund to repair the drain covers as it would not cost too much.

“I apologise for the broken drain covers. I admit the broken drain covers have been there for some time now; MPP will carry out repairs immediately.

“The money for repairs will come from Marris Fund — the same fund MPP used to patch up and reseal our roads,” he told The Borneo Post when responding to a complaint on the broken drain covers yesterday.

According to Lo, the Marris Fund is a federal funding of RM27,500 per kilometre for the council to surface roads with premix, repair drains and footpaths, as well as for grass-cutting on main road verges.

He, however, said to reseal a road surface with premix would cost around RM200,000 per kilometre.

“So at the end of the day, I have to say that we need more development funds from federal government,” he added.

According to a complainant yesterday, the issue on the broken drain covers had been highlighted to the council but no action had been taken to address the situation.

Generally, broken drains are a major concern not only in view of safety of members of the public, but also in terms of hygiene in that some irresponsible individuals may see these exposed drains as receptacles for rubbish.
