KUCHING: A total of 150 dengue fever cases have been recorded in Kuching, Bau and Lundu from January until October this year.

Kuching recorded 136 cases, Bau (11) and Lundu (3).

Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang who revealed this, said while many dengue cases were recorded in the city areas, there were also increasing cases in areas under the council’s jurisdictions.

Among the areas and villages were Paroh, Tapah, Bengoh, Plaman Teng, Karu, Taman Desa Wira, Plaman Seromah, Chupak and Gayu.

“We had a council meeting on public health last month whereby representatives from various government agencies including Health Department were also present.

“I am quite concerned with the statistics of dengue cases being brought up during the meeting because dengue cases in the council jurisdiction are also increasing,” he told a press conference at the MPP Service Centre in Batu Kawah New Township yesterday.

He said one of the major causes of dengue fever was human acts of not keeping the environment clean such as dumping rubbish illegally thus creating breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

Lo also revealed clogged drains in housing and commercial areas due to illegal dumping of rubbish were also issues that the council had to constantly tackle.

Awareness campaigns and programmes have been held to educate the people but problems like this continued to happen, he said.

He therefore called upon the people including those living under the council jurisdiction to cooperate with them to keep the environment clean.

Meanwhile, an environment officer from the Health Department Kassim Serah who was also present at the meeting yesterday revealed that the latest outbreak of dengue cases under MPP areas had been recorded in Simuti, Bengoh, Chupak and Sikog.

“An outbreak is when two cases are recorded within 14 days in one locality.

“We also have isolated cases in Gayu, Biyar Jabor, Sadir, Braang Bayur, Jambu, Landeh, Teng Bukap, Karu, Sungai Moyan, Taman Moyan, Rantau Panjang, Sudat and Desa Wira,” he said.

He said that in villages, most of the breeding of mosquitoes happened in natural habitats such as in bamboo stumps filled with rainwater after they had been cut.

As such, he said it was important to clear breeding places to reduce risk of dengue cases.
He also revealed that mega cleanings had been carried out in outbreak localities including in Simuti, Bengoh and Chupak with the cooperation of the local council.

“We also hold public awareness programme to educate the villagers about Aedes mosquitoes and their breeding places, dengue fever symptoms and treatments.

MPP deputy chairman councillor Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Trieneken senior manager for logistics and services Sarius Lee were among those present at the meeting.
