Lo Khere Chiang pointed out the Padawan Pitcher Plant Garden - a unique attraction


KUCHING:* Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Pitcher Plant Garden is a good place to visit for the visitors.

MPP Chairman Lo Khere Chiang pointed out the Pitcher Plant Garden has the potential to become the most visited place in Sarawak with its unique attraction.

“The Pitcher Plant Garden offers 35 different species and sub-species of pitcher plants from all over the island of Borneo,” pointed out Lo during a press conference at the Pitcher Plant Garden at Mile 10, Padawan yesterday.

He added there are also small collection of wild orchids and other rare and exotic wild plants found in Padawan area in display at the garden.

There is also the recycle garden. Lo noted that there is a plan to exhibit pitcher plants from other ASEAN regions and from the local highlands in the near future.

Also speaking at the press conference was Councilor Edward Kurik who said the garden is open to the public from this 28 November to 5 December this year.

 “There is no entrance fee for the visitors during this soft opening period and all are welcomed to experience the beautiful Pitcher Plant Garden,” he said. Kurik added after the soft opening period, local visitors will be charged RM3.00 per person while foreign visitors RM6.00 per person at the entrance. He explained the proceeds would be used to further improve the garden.

Kurik also reminded the people that pitcher plants are protected species in Sarawak and any person caught damaging or stealing or involved in any action to cause harm or damage to the plants in the garden shall be fined RM500.

The Pitcher Plant Garden was officially declared open by Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom on 24 June 2004. Also present at the press conference yesterday were MPP Deputy Chairman Dr. Zaiedi Suhaili and other invited guests.
