MPP to introduce Asean pitcher plants to garden

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is planning to introduce pitcher plants from other Asean countries as well as more local species to its Pitcher Plant Garden at Kota Padawan.
Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said MPP would develop the garden and seek federal funding as the council has no annual allocation to develop the garden.

“With our initiative and passion, we managed to develop the garden, which we will vigorously promote for tourism,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said at present no other pitcher plant garden has been developed in the state.

The garden also has a collection of wild plants such as orchids, which are ideal for research and studies.

“We see this garden as having a huge potential for development, which we will seriously embark on and tap the potential as a major tourist attraction,” he said, adding that developing the garden was among MPP’s conservation efforts. The entrance fee is RM3 for Malaysians and RM6 for foreign tourists, while tourist guides and taxi drivers who bring tourists to visit the garden can enter for free.

A soft opening for the garden will be held on Nov 28 and in connection with this, entry will be free from Dec 1-5.
