KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC)
has announced the birth of an orangutan baby at the Semenggoh Nature Reserve
(SNR) where the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is located.
The pregnant orangutan mother, Analisa, was
last seen at the feeding platform on 13 September and on 18 September she came
for feeding with a baby clinging onto her.
It is believed that the new orangutan baby
was born on 16 September, Malaysia Day. The mother and baby looked fine but the
gender of the baby has not yet been able to be determined because it is still
clutching too closely to its protective mother.
Analisa, 20, was also born at Semenggoh to
Seduku, 45, which is the oldest female orangutan at the Wildlife Centre.
Analisa has so far given birth to three progenies, the first two, Anakku and
Digital Guro.
Digital Guro, a male, was adopted by the
Guro District Council of Seoul, South Korea, but unfortunately died prematurely
of natural causes in November 2015at
the age of three.
With this new birth, Semenggoh has 27
free-ranging orangutans which are of constant delight to visitors.
KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has identified Mile 3 and Kota Sentosa as among highly populated areas which require a paid parking system.
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the council would not include all the over 2,000 parking bays under the proposed system.
“If the public want it, then there is a good reason to impose it. If the public do not mind the congestion, then we should not impose it. To me, we do this for the good of the public,” he told reporters yesterday.
The Batu Kitang assemblyman said many in Mile 3 and Kota Sentosa were in favour of a paid parking system because there is a shortage of parking spaces during certain hours.
Citing Mile 3 as an example, he said many motorists could not find a parking bay, particularly in the morning, with a similar situation in Kota Sentosa.
“So maybe we do it (impose parking fees) in the morning only. Even if we have the parking system, we will only use it where it is necessary,” he said.
Lo stressed that the objective of the proposed parking system is not to make money for MPP but “to reduce congestion in highly populated areas”.
He added the proposed paid system could use coupons similar to Kuching South City Council and Kuching North City Commission.
“Or it can be electronic. We need a good system, a common system and perhaps not so common. We need one system that can work for three councils and Kuching City Parking System can be one of them.
“But it is also possible for MPP to have a whole new system because many companies have come to see us,” he said.
Lo said MPP is conducting administrative work to prepare for the system.
“Gazetting the carparks is ongoing. A lot of procedures need to be done,” he said.
KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) wants future housing and commercial centre development projects implemented within its jurisdiction to have space allocated for large markets.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also MPP chairman, said the government’s failure to allocate larger spaces for markets at existing major commercial areas within the council’s jurisdiction such as MJC Batu Kawah New Township, Mile 3 and Mile 7 was one of the main reasons why people had been trading illegally at parking lots.
He made the observation that housing estates were mushrooming around these areas, even up to those in Mile 10 now.
Presently, many hawkers are trading at parking lots on certain weekdays and during weekends – creating parking problems for motorists.
“I think housing all these hawkers under one roof and legalising them are the only ways to solve the problem. But we need a space, a strategic area to house them, which we don’t have because there was none allocated for this purpose when the development was approved back then.
“We can’t even extend the existing markets at Mile 3, Mile 7 and Mile 10 now because if we do that, it means we are taking the parking spaces away from motorists. Even now, people have been complaining of not enough parking lots available at these booming commercial areas,” he told The Borneo Post, commenting on the issue of illegal hawkers in MPP’s areas.
Lo said the government must try to include sites for big markets in future residential and commercial housing projects within areas under MPP’s jurisdiction.
He believed that by doing so, the issue of illegal hawkers could be tackled without using force.
He said the government could not wait until towns grew beyond the stage where there would be no viable space left for a market to meet the day-to-day needs of the people.
“By then, it would be a lot more difficult to find any space for a big market; therefore, planning has to start well before the town grows too big.
“The potential space for a market has to be identified and gazetted so that the developer will not touch it.
“The space needs to be gazetted because the land will become too valuable to be used as a market space by the time the town grows too big,” he said.
According to Lo, a market is a basic necessity to ensure that the daily needs of a growing population in the area would be met.
KUCHING: The state government will continue to cooperate with the federal government to ensure the smooth implementation of policies for the development of Sarawak.
Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg pointed out that compared to previous prime ministers, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is the most frequent visitor to the state.
“He came with goodies, funds for development and above all this shows his commitment to ensure Sarawak is level with Peninsular Malaysia,” said Abang Johari during a Chinese New Year dinner at SJK Chung Hua Batu 10 on Thursday.
On the devolution of power, Abang Johari said both the state and federal governments are committed to ensuring the rights enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement (MA63) are fulfilled.
“Both of us, me and Datuk Seri Najib have a stake in the agreement as both our fathers signed it, and it is our responsibility to duly follow what has been agreed upon,” he said.
Abang Johari added that he will continue Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s policies and pledged to also be a Chief Minister for all races.
“I will try my best to bring development to benefit every community in Sarawak. After all, in team Tok Nan, I have capable team players such as (Deputy Chief Ministers) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, Tan Sri Datuk Amar James Masing and (Local Government Minister) Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Apart from my party (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), I would like to thank other BN (Barisan Nasional) component parties in the state for their trust in me to lead as the sixth Chief Minister,” he said.
Abang Johari called on the people to continue supporting BN during the upcoming parliamentary election and pointed out that the state BN is aiming to win at least 29 parliamentary seats.
Meanwhile, Dr Sim in his speech said the Chinese community are relieved as Abang Johari has assured a continuation of Adenan’s policies.
“We still have more to be done to help the Chinese, and this is why we need a strong mandate for the BN in the coming election,” he said.
Dr Sim also pointed out that Najib has given much assistance to Chinese-medium schools, which demonstrated his trust towards the capabilities of the schools.
