    60 teams for Padawan 4x4 Challenge

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will be organising the inaugural ‘Padawan International 4x4 Off-Roaders Extreme Challenge’ at the Bengoh Resettlement Scheme (BRS), Jalan Puncak Borneo from May 22 to 24.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the event already promised of success as there are 60 regional teams from Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah who have confirmed their participation.

“I would like to encourage the locals from near and far such as Kuching, Miri, Lawas, Limbang and Sabah to come and witness the event,” he said during a press conference at MPP, here, yesterday.

Lo said through the event, participants from other countries can have the opportunity to visit beautiful scenes in Padawan areas such as Mambong, Anah Rais Longhouse, Benuk Longhouse, Rafflesia Garden, Biodiversity Centre, Orang Utans and the caves.

“Padawan has the best tourism spot in Kuching area, for example, Bengoh will be a good potential destination for tourism,” he added.

He said the event will be Sarawak’s major tourism event in the tourism calendar.

Meanwhile, organising chairman Wilfred Yap said that more than 1,000 visitors, including competitors are expected to join the event.

“Final preparations are now being carried out at the venue site. Various safety aspects of the track consisting of slopes and hills of various heights and angels are also being looked into to ensure that it complies with the highest international standard,” he said, adding that the event is sanctioned by Automobile Association Malaysia (AAM).

Yap said that competitors will demostrate their abilities and skills in showcasing their modified 4x4 vehicle’s flexibility and manoeuvrability in various types of terrain of rocks, mud and water.

“Admission to the event is free and visitors may win lucky prizes as they participate in

various side activities during the race,” he said.

He assured visitors and members of the public not to worry about the road congestion and there will be many car parks available during the event.

“Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem will be the guest of honour to attend the event, but will be represented by Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil,” he said.
