Dry spell man-made, lay off trees — Dawos

KUCHING: Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Dr James Dawos Mamit did not rule out human activities as the cause of the current drought season.

He said the cutting of forests meant there were not enough trees to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen and water vapour, which eventually lead to global warming and climate change.

Every year, 40 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide are released to the environment, including 167 million metric tonnes emitted from Malaysia, due to industrial activities, he explained.

“Now, drought season occurs due to the phenomenon called El Nino, which may last from this month onwards until January next year. There will be less rain. So, we have to bear with it.

“This happens due to activities of human beings, and what the human beings have done,” he said at the prize giving ceremony for the 9th annual Padawan Raft Safari at Kampung Git, 50km from here, yesterday.

He appealed to the people, especially those living along Sungai Sarawak Kiri, to limit the cutting of trees during this current drought season. He said the water catchment areas of Sungai Sarawak Kiri served as the raw water source for Kuching Water Board.

On the Padawan Raft Safari, which is organised by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Dawos, who is also Mambong MP, said it could be a main event in the tourism calendar in line with the government’s target to attract 36 million tourists in 2020, which would generate income of about RM68 billion.

About 90 teams competed in the raft race, with each team comprising four persons on a raft. There were five categories: Expert (26km), Men’s Open (20km), Women’s, Government’s Departments as well as Hotels and Tour Agencies (17km)

The starting points were at Annah Rais, Danu and Temurang, while the finishing point is at Kampung Git. A total RM24,500 in prize money were up for grabs.

Present yesterday were Assistant Minister of Heritage Liwan Lagang, Permanent Secretary to the Tourism Ministry Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang and organising chairman Edward Kurik.

Lo, in his speech, said MPP allocated RM1.5 million to improve the infrastructure for the raft safari.
