KUCHING: Datuk Ir Lo Khere Chiang expressed his gratitude to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for approving the RM400 million interchange project for the Mile 8 area here.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman highlighted the severe traffic congestion during peak hours in the area.

Lo further explained that the traffic congestion results from the four-way intersection at Mile 8 still utilizing a traffic light system, despite it being a crucial intersection connecting Kota Samarahan, Kota Padawan, and the exit to Kuching city.

“I raised this issue once during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on April 18, 2023. Subsequently, on May 12, 2023, I flew to Sibu to meet with Nanta and briefed him on the urgent need for this interchange, requesting his assistance,” he stated.

“He attentively listened and promised to prioritize this request urgently. Finally, on June 24, he announced the approval of the project,” he added.

He made these statements during a press conference about the project at the Batu Kitang Service Centre on Friday morning (June 28).

“I sincerely hope that this flyover brings joy and relief to all road users who rely on this route for daily commutes to school, work, or the city,” he expressed.

When asked about the project’s commencement date, Lo mentioned that several consultations and discussions with consultants and contractors were needed to determine who would be best suited for the job.

“Since obtaining approval for this project took us at least one year, the process was quite tedious. However, once we have everything in place, we will inform the public about the date,” he assured.

On another note, he questioned why Padungan MP Chong Chieng Jen stated in his statement that the interchange project would be unnecessary, suggesting instead that the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman Tan Kai adjust the timing of the traffic lights to alleviate the congestion at Mile 8.

“He wasted the people’s valuable time by not raising this interchange request in Parliament, which is his responsibility as an elected parliamentarian,” he said.

Earlier reports mentioned that Nanta stated the construction project for the interchange would commence next year if preliminary work could be completed by the end of this year.

Upon being alerted to the congestion issue, he, along with the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), held a meeting with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas to address the matter.

He explained that he proposed the construction of an interchange in the area to facilitate smooth vehicular movement, especially during peak hours.

“Initially, the Mile 8 roundabout was not part of the Pan Borneo Highway project, but it now experiences severe congestion throughout the day. Therefore, when we presented and proposed this, it was agreed upon by the Premier, who instructed us to prioritise the issue at Batu 8,” he concluded.
