Batu Kawa Wetlands Waterfront Park project in the pipeline
KUCHING: A wetlands waterfront park will be developed in Batu Kawa here at a cost of RM5 million.
Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, said the proposed project has been approved by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He revealed that a landscape architecture firm has been appointed as consultant of the project by the Sarawak State Treasury to design the project named Batu Kawa Wetlands Waterfront Park.
“Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will work closely with the consultant to ensure that tender documents would be prepared as soon as possible. If everything goes on smoothly, the tender for the project may be called by January next year.
“The proposed project would be completed in stages. The consultant will design the works for the first stage. Other stages will be designed when funds are available,” he said.
Dr Sim was accompanied by MPP officials and architects from the consultant’s firm on a site visit last weekend. He also mentioned that the land required for the riverbank park had been approved by the relevant authorities.
He explained that the project was proposed to transform the old Batu Kawa bazaar and its surrounding areas.
