SSPCA president, Datin Dona Drury Wee reminded every dog owners not to blame others if their pet is caught roaming freely, as people who are feeling threatened by their presence will definitely lodge a complaint to the authorities in the wake of rabies outbreak.
“You should not allow them roaming freely just because you have license from the (local) council, that is not the license to roam,” she lamented.
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animal (SSPCA) believes that up to 80 per cents of the free roaming dogs in Kuching city are not stray dogs.
“SSPCA conducted a survey in 2013 for the whole of DBKU (Kuching North City Commission) area, as well as for the whole of MBKS (Kuching South City Council) area and during that survey we noted that there are few true strays,” SSPCA president, Datin Dona Drury Wee told Borneo Post online.
“Most of the animals that were roaming around, had collars. They looked well fed, they were in good condition, a lot of them were sitting outside the gates. This was how we ascertained that about 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the dogs that roam in the streets were actually free roaming dogs with owners,” she stressed.
Dona was met at Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC) Open Day, University Malaysia of Sarawak (Unimas) new campus after delivering a talk in conjunction with the World Animal Day that is commemorated every Oct 4.
“Today is the World Animal Day, is the day where we remember that all the animals that live in this world with us because as human, we are responsible for their welfare. As owners, we are responsible to what happened to the dogs,” she said.

Wee said dog owners are not only responsible to keep their dog safe but are also equally responsible for children and other people’s well-being.
“It is your responsibility to keep your dog within your own compound, don’t complaint if somebody caught your dog because you let your dog run out. You are not supposed to let your dog roam freely where they can chase children, where they can chase people on bicycle and pose a threat. It is your responsibility,” she reminded.
