KUCHING: Sarawakians are united despite their racial and religious differences, says Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang at the MPP Chinese New Year (CNY) open house yesterday.

“This is obvious especially during major festivities where people of different races visit each other,” he said.

“Quoting our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, we should not take the prevailing peace and social harmony for granted. We also have to practise moderation.

“We must not harbour any prejudice but instead appreciate the importance of the various festivities celebrated in Malaysia and strive to strengthen unity, goodwill and harmony which are synonymous with our country’s multi-cultural and multi-ethnic context,” he said.

He added that the council was committed to work harder to implement their plans for the year on the back of their success last year.

He said Padawan Fest 2015 was a huge success while other programmes such as the Safe City in MPP jurisdiction to combat crime had reduced the crime rate in Padawan area with help from the police.

“I believe with our professional team we can do our best to serve the people. There are always challenges but they are not obstacles for us to strive for success,” he said.

The council also treated residents of Sarawak Cheshire Home and gave them ang pows yesterday.
