Council assures scattered rubbish will be cleared
Lo was responding to a complaint by a person with the pseudonym of ‘A concerned citizen’ through the ‘Letters to the Editor’ column published in The Borneo Post yesterday.
The complainant said overloaded and scattered rubbish was the daily sight of that waste collection site opposite Emart Matang and the situation would get worse during festive season. Lo pointed out that the underlying issue was due to a group of scavengers digging through the waste for the past weeks after a lot of recyclable waste was dumped there by the nearby business operators around festive season.
“No matter how many times the area was cleaned up, the scavengers would dig through the big and small rubbish bins and leave all unwanted items all over the floor.
“The cleaners and security personnel can only watch as they scavenge through the bins,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.
Lo said eye-witness said the scavengers went in with vans and three vans were spotted during Hari Raya.
“I understand that that there are enough bins provided. To me, this is all about educating our society to keep clean,” said Lo
Lo suggested that a possible solution is for the waste collection site to be walled up and to be opened only during rubbish collection days.
He said all the while they had been educating the people about keeping the environment clean and they would put more effort to do so. They will organise a campaign to educate the public on the possibility of facing an outbreak of diseases if they practise a dirty habit. The council would work with Trienekens to look into how to solve the problem of unruly scavenging, said Lo.
