KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) enforcement team will have no other option but to ban the mobile hawkers occupying the parking spaces at Mile 3 Maong bazaar here from trading in the area.
Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang said such drastic action had to be taken, if all other measures failed, to make the hawkers realise that by occupying the parking spaces they caused parking problems and traffic congestion.
“If everything else fails, my enforcement team will have to be very drastic to cart away their (mobile hawkers) goods and forbid them from trading at Mile 3 Maong bazaar,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.
Lo was responding to a complaint by a regular bazaar patron, Peter Bong who said that the presence of the mobile hawkers, occupying almost half of the parking spaces in Mile 3 Maong bazaar, had caused parking problems besides obstructing the traffic.
Bong, in his complaint also questioned the competency of MPP enforcement team who seemed to have failed to deter the mobile hawkers from occupying the parking spaces.
“You will see many tents and stalls being set up during day time and evening time at their convenience. During festive seasons, the situation is even worse.
“Do they know the law that they are supposed to enforce? They are the ones that are supposed to ensure all the traders are licensed and not let the traders to simply hawk at the parking spaces.”
“You know there is a problem there, so station your enforcement officers throughout the day to ensure that those hawkers don’t simply set up their stalls that will obstruct traffic and become an eyesore.”
Bong said besides lack of enforcement, the officers seemed to be ‘toothless’ as after their operation, the hawkers will be back in an hour’s time.
He believed that MPP is aware of the problem but the ‘don’t care’ attitude among the enforcement officers had caused the problem to be unresolved for a long time.
In acknowledging Bong’s complaint, Lo said he also received many complaints from the public, including the shopkeepers who felt that it was not acceptable for the mobile hawkers to occupy the parking spaces.
“If the mobile hawkers refused to cooperate with us by relocating to the bazaar market, MPP enforcement team will have no other choice but to remove the hawkers to pacify the public.”
Lo said the practice of the mobile hawkers is not acceptable now as their activities in the area had caused traffic congestion, dirty the roads and caused parking problems.
