KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang reminded Kuching Water Board (KWB) to take good care of public amenities and infrastructure when doing their work.
The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman said he had received many complaints from residents that the water authority did not restore public utilities and infrastructure after completing their piping work.
He said among the complaints were that KWB did not resurface the roads properly, piles of earth near residential areas not cleared and roads being damaged after piping work.
“Members of the public have the right to complain as who would want to live in areas with damaged roads or dirty surrounding. KWB must do more than doing piping works as they are responsible for taking care of the amenities and infrastructure too,” he told reporters when inspecting the road condition at Jalan Semaba on Monday.
He said some parts of the area, especially the main road, were partially damaged due to recent piping work by KWB.
Thus, he suggested that KWB hire contractors who are responsible and competent in doing their jobs and not those who can only do piping works.
“Contractors who are irresponsible should not be hired anymore and KWB should also take the trouble to identify contractors who not only can do piping works, but restoration work  after they completed piping work.
“KWB should more  responsible… Their job will only be finished if they make sure that members of the public are not burdened after they finished their piping work,” he said.
He said sub-standard work done by a government organisation would only make the people put the blame on the government.
“As representatives of the government, we must make sure that we are doing our jobs properly for the people. I hope KWB will improve the quality of their (restoration) work in the future,” he emphasised.
Accompanying Lo during the visit were KWB senior executive engineer Teo Seo Lin, councillors, community leaders and others.
