KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) are working together on a joint solid waste education and recycling programme for schools within the council’s jurisdiction.
Its deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim said the success of the MPP-Trienekens pilot project with SK Taba Sait had motivated the council to work with other schools for similar purpose.
“We hope to do this programme not just with primary schools but also with secondary schools and universities within our jurisdiction.
“We will not just stop here, we will not give up, but will move forward to keep our environment clean, he said at the launch of the recycling programme at Bengoh Resettlement Scheme near here yesterday.
Ahmad said the council was aware that the issue of solid waste management and environmental maintenance was not new.
He said the council had always brought up the issue in their meetings, discussed ways to raise public awareness and reminded the people their responsibilities in maintaining the cleanliness and well-being of the environment.
He noted that waste was always increasing in tandem with the rise in population and the rapid pace of development.
“There are many things we can do together to achieve a satisfactory level of hygiene and higher recycling rate than what we have done today.
“Do not be complacent with what we have achieved. We must continue to change our mindset and our habits. The practice of recycling and taking care of our dwelling places should come from us, while educating and nurturing our children to do the same at schools,” he said.
Ahmad said that recycling should also be done not merely to make profit but also by the desire to safeguard the environment and preserve the natural resources for future generations.
Trienekens environment and R&D manager Dayang Sherrynazra Awang Sharkawi and SK Taba Sait headmaster Jameson Simod were also present at the function.
