Frequent power disruptions affect 500 area residents: Haji Baki Residents

KUCHING: About 500 people of Kampung Haji Baki located at 7th Mile, Batu Kitang are affected by frequent power disturbances over the last couple of months.

Many questioned the source of the problem, mainly due to the village which is located not far from Batu Kitang and Kota Sentosa.

Agitated, a resident who only wanted to be known as Salehah raised her concerns over the matter to the New Sarawak Tribune as the problem has been persisting for quite sometime and does not see any improvement.

“Last Tuesday night, a power failure occurred at around 1.00am affecting two villages, ours (Kampung Haji Baki) and Kampung Semaba.

“When I contacted the relevant authorities, an automated voice would report the current situation and also disclosed the estimated time that the problem would be resolve. I am staying alone and my concern is on my safety especially when it is all pitch black.

“Because power failures have been occurring too many times over the past few months and it is not getting better, I hope the relevant authority will take some action pretty soon,” said Salehah.

She also told that during the eve of Hari Raya AidilAdha, there was no electricity from 2.00pm to 7.00pm. On a more recent note, about a week ago, another major power disturbance occurred when there was downpour, which lasted from 3.00pm to 7.00pm.

“Things like these should not happen. Does this mean that we should be prepared to face the day without electricity when there is storm coming?” said Salehah, frustrated.

Another resident, who works as a clerk said that the problem first occurred back in September and there would be disturbances at least three times in a month.

Known as Hana, she said that each power disturbance would most likely last for one to two hours and may go up to three to four hours.

“These days, we depend a lot on electrical appliances and with such constant power failures it has become an inconvenience to me and my family.

“Because of this, some of our electrical appliances have gone haywire. We want to know what’s causing this problem and why has it not been overcome yet?” she added.

Hana is currently living in her residence with her father, daughter and nephew.
