KUCHING: The school-level solid waste segregation programme introduced by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd at SM Sains Kuching (SainsKu) last year has begun to exhibit good results.
The programme, entering its second year of implementation, was intended to instil greater awareness of the environment and recycling practices in students.
“Since the programme’s kick-off, students and teachers of SainsKu have shown exemplary attitude and efforts in preserving the environment,” said MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang after a tree-planting ceremony held at the school recently.
“The school is not only one of the cleanest I’ve seen, but the level of commitment and discipline shown by its members is commendable. These are clearly important values that can help boost the green initiatives by the school. Students are now more aware that most of the waste we throw away everyday are recyclable or reusable, which helps greatly in sustaining the natural resources. I would like to encourage students and teachers to continue on with the good work,” he said.
As part of the programme, Trienekens officials also gave a talk to 200 students and teachers, which highlighted the importance of preserving the environment through proper management and disposal of solid waste, while embracing the recycling habit as a way of life.
“This educational project provides an opportunity to the students to demonstrate their commitment in environmental preservation and sustainability,” said Trienekens general manager for business development, Elvin Wee.
“We are always keen to work together with schools – in this case with SainsKU – by way of combining our ideas and knowledge with the aim to educate the younger generation about recycling, waste management and environmental protection.”
In line with the school’s own ‘Go Green Project’ run by its French Club, Student Leaders Board, English Language Club and Interact Club, the pilot project focuses on motivating and empowering students to discard their waste by separating them from the point of generation – beginning from inside their classrooms and school compounds.
The students also learn to prepare their own recycling bins or boxes to keep the different types of recyclables. Following the recent talk, Trienekens will also conduct other educational activities such as scheduled collection, inter-class collection competition, workshops, seminars and those related to solid waste management and recycling, with SainKu.
The solid waste segregation programme is part of Trienekens’ ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) mission in educating and instilling awareness of the environment in the members of the public, especially school students.
