Haze: No directive to close public facilities, says Lo
KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) has no plans to close public facilities like recreational premises even though there is haze, unless there is a directive to do so.
Its chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, said the council could not close anything on its own, as doing so might cause panic.
“The haze is an annual occurrence and we have been living through this for many years.
“If the same situation repeats like the one in 1997, the government may take the same action, which is closing schools. For now, it is not an issue,” said Lo, when met after the Borneo Highlands Padawan Nature Challenge’s press conference here yesterday.
He hoped the Malaysian government could pressure the Indonesian government to stop all open burning, which is the cause of the haze.
“With the technology today, we can locate where the open burnings are and who are involved.
“Our government and its Indonesian counterpart should sit down to find an amicable solution to this problem.”
