KUCHING: SM Sains here, the beneficiary of a waste segregation campaign, has been called one of the cleanest schools.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said students and teachers had set an example for others to emulate.

“This school is not only one of the cleanest I’ve seen, its students and teachers have shown a high level of discipline and commitment,” Lo said during a tree-planting ceremony recently.

MPP and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd are sponsoring a solid waste segregation programme at the school. Currently in its second year of implementation, the programme aims to instil civic mindedness and environmentalism. Recycling is at the heart of the programme.

“These are important values that can boost the green understanding among youths. Students are now more aware of waste, reusables and recyclables. I would certainly like to encourage students and teachers to continue the good work,” Lo said.

As part of the tree planting, Trienekens’ personnel gave a talk on its waste management methods and why recycling was more important than ever to ensure environmental sustainability. About 200 students attended the talk.

Business development general manager Elvin Wee said the programme would continue.

“We are always keen to work with schools. At SM Sains, we try to combine our ideas and knowledge with the aim of educating the next generation about environmental protection,” Wee said.
