Lo Khere Chiang: Cooperate with police to combat crime




KUCHING: Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang called on the residents of the neighbourhood watch area to work together in combating crimes with the police.

Lo speaking at a Rock Road neighbourhood watch group dialogue said he did not expect the residents to fight the criminals but to be the ears and eyes of the police.

He said as a community, everyone must chip in to keep your housing estates safe.

“Although it is the job of the police, we should play our role to watch out for one another,” he said.

The large turnout of more than 150 shows that the people are committed and tired of the crimes in their areas, he said.

Lo said if they see any suspicious characters in their area, they could go there and horn to scare the thieves after informing the police.

Earlier on, Dr. Chan Tiang Ho, a member of the Rock Road Neighbourhood Watch Committee said residents in Rock Road areas had been plagued with unwanted elements including a spate of thefts and motorcyclists cursing the persons loitering in their areas that has become a very worrying problem.

He said this prompted them to start a Neighbourhood Crime Watch Group to deal with the problems. He was speaking at the Neighbourhood Watch Crime Dialogue with the police and other area Crime Watch group held at a carpark at Lorong Permata.

Esther Tan who is the protem chairperson initiated a meeting on 1 September in one of the residences and had received a positive response.

Dr Chan added that the dialogue was to bring up security issues to the police and to get their assistance to safeguard the neighbouring areas there.

He thanked Lo Khere Chiang for his presence and the police to give their valued views on how to tackle crime prevention.

Thanks to modern technology, Dr. Chan said two What’sApp Chat groups were set up and besides sharing information on suspicious figures, he said it helped to boost up relationships among the residents.

The group also has the telephone numbers of the police, the hospitals and the Fire and Rescue Department and the council hot line.
