KUCHING: Vandalism on public properties in
areas under the jurisdiction of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is still
rampant, said MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang.
“We have to be strict on the matter and it
is very important for the council to have evidence against those responsible.
Without evidence, we cannot take any action to solve the problem,” he told the
media after the MPP full council meeting on Wednesday.
He urged members of the public to report
any act of vandalism they witnessed through the council’s Tali Khidmat.
“When we have evidence, we can give
warnings or take legal actions. It is important for the public to cooperate and
practise the spirit of good neigbourliness to overcome vandalism in MPP areas,”
said Lo.
He said with only 12 enforcement officers,
there was limitation for MPP to enforce efficiently.
“We will apply to the government to
increase on the number of enforcement personnel,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the standing
committee for market licensing and enforcement, Wilfred Yap said the
enforcement division would have to be strict on the vandalism of public
properties.
“Next time, we will lodge police report on
vandalism. Destroying public properties is an offence under the penal code
rather than restricting the offence to council law,” he said.
