KUCHING: The Sarawak Buddhist Association celebrated the 30th anniversary of its kindergarten with a dinner at Christian Ecumenical Centre here, last Sunday.

The guest-of-honour Senator Professor Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was represented by chairman of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Lo Khere Chiang at the function.

In his speech, Lo said that the establishment of the kindergarten by the Buddhist Association had enabled parents to send their children for early childhood education.

“Early childhood education is the basic in a child’s development stage where they learn to read and write,” he said.

Lo added that it was important for parents to send their children to play school at the age of three to speed up their learning process.

“By setting up a kindergarten, the Buddhist Association gives children the opportunity to have an education and now the kindergarten is already well known.

“Since the kindergarten’s syllabus follows the country’s education system, the parents need not have to worry when sending their children to the kindergarten,” he said.

Lo also said that although the management of the kindergarten is mostly Buddhists parents of other religions can also send their children to study at the kindergarten.

“When it comes to education, kindergartens or schools must be colour blind as all races have the right to education,” Lo pointed out.

He added that the kindergarten also teaches the values of respecting other races and religions and when the children grow up they will understand others’ culture better.

During the dinner, long service awards were also presented to the kindergarten teachers who have served for more than 10 years.

The kindergarten principal Chai Suk Fah who has served for 24 years was among the awardees.

The dinner also witnessed the graduation of the kindergarten children.

The parents and teachers were also treated to a sumptuous dinner with dancing and singing performed by the kindergarten children.

Among those present were chairman of the Board of Management of Sarawak Buddhist Association Kindergarten, Lim Teck Hee and chairman of Sarawak Buddhist Association, Datuk Dr Tay Chin Kin.
