KUCHING (April 9): The reconstruction of the drainage project at the Mile 9 residential area should reach completion by this October, Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang has stated.

According to him, the project, which officially kicked off yesterday, is meant to address flooding problems affecting over 300 houses in the area, particularly those in Taman Emas and Taman Paradise.

He also disclosed that the project was granted RM2.5 million by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“The project will begin at the junction near Taman Emas, with the aim of alleviating the flooding problems that residents in the area have faced for over four years,” said Lo during a press conference at Mile 9 here.

Lo added that he had brought the issue to Nanta about six months ago, and shortly after that, the latter directed the Public Works Department (JKR) to commence construction.

Meanwhile, assistant divisional engineer (operations) Reman Adop said the project would include demolishing the existing drainage.

“We will construct an RC drain (reinforced concrete drain) where the culvert’s size will be expanded from 1.8m to 2.1m, estimated to be 36m long.

“The existing drain will be demolished and a new one will be much straighter to divert the (flow of) water,” said Reman, who also clarified that the contractors had been mobilised for the project and he hoped that the would reach completion on time this October.
