GE15: Three-way fight for Stampin parliamentary seat

KUCHING: The Stampin parliamentary seat will see a three-way fight between incumbent Chong Chieng Jen and two challengers.

DAP's Chong will face Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Lo Khere Chiang and Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Lue Cheng Hing, who is contesting on the Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) logo.

Returning officer Henry Jalin Watt announced that the nomination papers were received from all three candidates and added that none were rejected.

Lue was the first to file his papers at 9.01am, followed by Lo at 9.05am and Chong at 9.10am.

Lo was accompanied to the nomination centre at the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) headquarters by Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was his proposer.

SUPP is a component party of GPS.

Lo, who is the Batu Kitang assemblyman and MPP chairman, said he would work hard to convince voters to go forward with GPS in Stampin, which has been held by DAP since 2013.

"GPS is the only answer to Sarawak's quest for our rights. When GPS and Sarawak do well, Stampin will also do well," he said.

Meanwhile, Chong said DAP would continue to fight for a better Malaysia despite its setback in last December's state election when the party won only two seats.

He described GE15 as a battle of two fronts in terms of economic policies to tackle inflation and good governance.

"This is a federal election and I believe the consideration of the people will be very different.

"The battle lines are clear and the choice is for the people to decide," he said.
