Sanitise cutlery in hot water

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang has urged food premises to soak cutlery such as forks, spoons, and chopsticks in hot water to sanitise them before being used by customers.

“I encourage all food outlets and coffeeshops to practise this when serving the public,” he said, noting that cutlery was often left openly on tables at many coffeeshops under the council’s jurisdiction.

He said this during a press conference via Zoom after the MPP full council meeting today.

Lo added that it was compulsory for all employees at business premises to wear face masks when working. He reminded business premises to maintain cleanliness at all times and be sanitised regularly.

He said he noticed that lately, most – if not all – public toilets in Padawan were very clean, including those at petrol stations and coffeeshops.

“I hope that it is not just because of Covid-19 that we maintain this level of cleanliness. I hope we can continue this good habit and practise this level of hygiene in the future as well,” urged Lo.

Lo said the community had to continue practising the standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as social distancing, wearing face masks and good hygiene to ensure safety.

He pointed out that MPP had been taking all necessary measures such as checking on markets, ensuring that temperature checks were conducted, and making sure overcrowding did not occur.

“MPP takes this Covid-19 issue and the SOPs very seriously. So far, there have been no 14-day closures for places under MPP’s jurisdiction and we have been doing well,” he said.

On another matter, he shared statistics from Immigration Department Sarawak regarding arrests of undocumented immigrants in Padawan.

“From January 1 to August 6 this year, a total of 16 locations in Padawan were checked, involving 191 foreigners. Of these, 62 (undocumented immigrants) were arrested,” he said.

Lo also shared statistics from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) on crime in the area as well as information from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak.

“From 2018 to June this year, there were 114 people under surveillance in Padawan,” he said, referring to statistics reported by AADK Sarawak.

He said members of the public who wished to contact any of these agencies regarding relevant matters in Padawan could call the following telephone numbers:

Immigration Samarahan Branch: 082-428606
Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD Padawan) Operations Room: 082-862234
AADK Kuching: 082-233540

Leave road signages alone, Lo tells Dapsy

Leave road signages alone, Lo tells Dapsy
Aug 21, 2020 @ 15:21

KUCHING, Aug 21: Leave the road signages alone and stop playing politics with racial tones, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang told Kuching Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy).

“I am most unhappy with the DAP tactics of vandalising the road signages in Kuching city.

“This issue sparks off a lot of unnecessary debates with racial undertones in social media which is so ‘un-Sarawak’. We don’t need such a political game here,” he lashed out in a statement today.

He joined many other youth leaders of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in condemning Dapsy members’ attempt to restore Chinese characters on the road signages for Jalan Main Bazaar, Wayang Street and Jalan Green Hill here yesterday, which they alleged had been removed by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman, warned members of the opposition not to disturb, damage and disrupt the racial harmony that the diverse communities in Sarawak had long enjoyed and safeguarded using such sensitive issues.

“We are a multiracial state and we have a great example to show to the rest of Malaysia and even the world of our unique harmony. So why spoil it?,” he questioned.

“For decades, we have lived together as a family and we should not let a few road signages mar that harmony. DAP should not forget that Sarawak comprises many other races, Chinese, Malay, Dayak, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and so on,” he reminded.

Lo thus slammed that using such issues to win votes for political mileage was indeed foolish and unintelligent.

He said there were road signages with Chinese characters in Sibu, Miri, other towns and even in Padawan areas as it was good for Chinese tourists.

“But no one should drag this issue into a political one. The local councils will take note of all public requests and act on them where appropriate,” he added.

Irked by DAP’s senseless actions, he stressed that the Peninsula-based party can do what they want in Peninsular Malaysia instead of bringing in such toxic tactics to Sarawak.

“DAP, don’t try to be clever and take things into your own hands. Don’t bring this kind of political culture into harmonious Sarawak.

“Let us be thankful and appreciate what we are enjoying. Let us remind ourselves not to take the peace and harmony in Sarawak for granted,” he urged.

Yesterday former Stampin MP Julian Tan together with a group of Dapsy members had attached the Chinese names of Jalan Main Bazaar, Wayang Street and Jalan Green Hill on the road signages.

Tan said that it was part of Sarawak’s culture to have dual languages for road signages at appropriate places.

They reasoned that the three signages were chosen as a lot of businesses there were run by the Chinese community while the locations were a major tourist spot with the oldest Chinese temple in Kuching.-

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated around RM30 million to upgrade facilities at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the allocation will be divided into three stages parked under the Semenggoh Rainforest Discovery Centre project, which will integrate and upgrade ecotourism facilities and products at Semenggoh Nature Reserve and Botanical Research Centre to showcase Sarawak’s biodiversity and natural resources.
“The allocation will be used for the upgrading of the entrance to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, a botanical garden and for the centre itself,” he told a press conference after officiating the laying of the foundation for Semenggoh Rainforest Discovery Centre and internet connectivity ceremony at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre here today.
He elaborated that within the botanical garden, there will also be a laboratory for research to be carried out on Sarawak’s biodiversity.
“One of our efforts is to make Sarawak the central hub for conservation and the Sarawak government is putting a lot of investment now to make our state ‘green.’
“We have to provide a space for people to carry out research on our biodiversity that will balance our efforts on conservation and habitat. These two must co-exist.
“By building a lab in the botanical garden, this will enable people to do research where they can collect samples and run preliminary studies,” he explained.
Apart from that, Abang Johari said the state will also be upgrading the internet connectivity at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.
“We have to have high-speed Internet and this will be implemented by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) in collaboration with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
“With this improved connectivity, the local community and tourists will benefit from this as visitors can access and find out what is available at the centre,” he said.
The state government through SMA has approved RM3 million for providing 100Mbps fibre-optic internet connectivity to nine national parks including Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, Gunung Gading National Park, Tanjung Datu National Park, Kubah National Park, Matang Wildlife Centre, Similajau National Park, Niah National Park and Lambir Hills National Park.
The project, which is expected to be completed by July 2021, will enable visitors to download up-to-the-minute information on the park and the idea of ‘real-time’ ‘Instagramming’ on the park grounds will serve as a means to attract more tourists to the parks.
Abang Johari also said in the last five to ten years, the number of visitors to Semenggoh Wilife Centre has increased.
“I was told that the centre has received about one million visitors and today it is quite a well-known attraction which counts prominent people such as Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales; actress Michelle Yeoh and Hollywood star Steven Seagal among its visitors.
“That is one of the reasons why the state government has decided to upgrade the facility,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ceremony, which was held in conjunction with International Orangutan Day, also saw Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Sarawak Timber Association (STA) handing over donations of RM50,000 each to SFC for orangutan conservation and upgrading of the feeding platform at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.
SFC chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton was present to receive the cheques from STIDC general manager Hashim Bojet and STA chief executive officer Annie Ting respectively.
Also present were Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh, Stakan assemblyman Dato Sri Mohammad Ali Mahmud, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Sarawak Forest Department director Datu Hamden Mohamad.

KUCHING (Aug 16): The Telaga Air Waterfront will be extended and upgraded with better facilities and services under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said a more detailed discussion with the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) would be held on the proposed upgrading and extension plan of Telaga Air Waterfront, which would involve the construction of a marina there as well.
“The total length from one side to the other will be about 900 metres, and I will also discuss with the Sarawak Boat Club here who had requested for a marina. Maybe we will have a collaboration with the private sectors like the Sarawak Boat Club to manage the proposed marina.
“This is important for the tourists because they would need to rent boats to go sport fishing.
“Also, we may build a floating mosque not far from here. These (proposed plans) would help boost the development of Telaga Air,” he said during a press conference after a walkabout and visiting several locations to be developed in Telaga Air this afternoon.
He said while LCDA would be responsible for the infrastructure and physical development, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) would be maintaining and managing them.
On that note, Abang Johari said three spots in Kuching had been earmarked for development to boost the tourism sectors in the state under the 12MP namely Telaga Air, Pantai Damai and Lundu Sematan.
“I will look at all the inputs so that we can plan developments for these three spots under the 12MP, which are a series of areas that could attract tourism because of their ecotourism potential.
“When the Rambungan Bridge is completed, the road journey between Teluk Melano and Telaga Air here will only be 40 minutes.
“All of these three spots are within the national parks. Meaning they all have ecotourism potential that is rarely can be found in other parts of the world.
“They have the right (natural) diversity. What we just need to do now is develop and upgrade the facilities and services,” he said.
Also accompanying him were Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and PMC chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

KUCHING (Aug 15): The farming community in the state should strive to produce high-quality agriculture products in order to penetrate international markets, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Uggah, who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, said that the state government had enlisted the help of experts to assist farmers, especially those in the interior, to produce quality agricultural products that were desired by the international market.
“We are not just competing with the markets in Tasik Biru, Kuching or Betong, We are competing our agriculture products with those from Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam.
“So, we must uplift our agriculture sector and position ourselves to compete at the international level,” he said when officiating a ‘Community Extension Outreach Programme’ at Kampung Kopit’s multipurpose hall, Bau here today.
He pointed out that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had earmarked the objective for the state to be a net exporter of food products by 2030 but so far, the state was still a net importer with an annual value of about RM4 billion.
“It’s a big challenge (to be net exporter) but I can see the people here are very enthusiastic. We have a lot of land in the state and these land can be converted into production units to make the agricultural business more competitive and viable,” he said, adding that the agricultural department had been roped in to provide the required technologies and new varieties of agriculture seeds.
Besides, Uggah said another RM1 million would be allocated by his ministry under the Agriculture Facilitation Fund (AFF) to the Serembu constituency to better assist farmers in rural areas in improving their produce.
He also added Local Farmers’ Organisations (PPK) would need to be re-aligned to support the state government’s objective of being a net food exporter and help farmers in lowering their operation costs while increasing productivity.
Moreover, Uggah said that the state government had set aside venture capital totalling RM100 million to enable farmers to access financing in achieving greater scale for their farms.
Meanwhile, Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh urged farmers in his constituency to grab hold of the opportunities offered by the state government in enhancing the state agriculture industry via financial, expertise and machinery assistance.
He remarked some of the main agricultural products planted in his constituency were MD2 pineapples, baby corn and Betong ginger.
Miro also opined the state, with its population of about 3 million, should reduce its dependency on imported food products, due to food safety and security concerns, and industrial farming needed to be greater promoted in the community.
“Sarawak is the largest state in the country while having only a population of about 3 million yet we still import a lot from outside. This is quite concerning if we talk about food safety and food security”, he said.
Providing an example, Uggah in his speech said the self-sufficiency level of beef products in the state was only at about 10 per cent.
Among those in attendance during the ceremony were Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.

Bersatu di bawah parti lain merugikan Sarawak, kata ADUN Batu Kitang
Aug 10, 2020 @ 13:57

— DayakDaily

KUCHING, Aug 7: Various steps and measures have been taken to ensure that the Kota Sentosa market as well as other markets under MPP’s jurisdiction is safe for the public.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, disclosed that all traders at the Kota Sentosa market, including the vegetable and food sellers have been tested, and all tests came back negative.

The tests, he said, were conducted on all the traders and hawkers in the market by the Health Department a few days after confirmed Covid-19 cases were recorded in Sentosa Hospital.

“For other markets in MPP’s jurisdiction, we have maintained the highest practice of the SOP (standard operating procedure), such as measuring (body) temperatures and taking their details, not only for the customers, but the hawkers and traders too,” he added.

Lo pointed out the council wants to be cautious but not overly worried either. He gave his assurance that it is perfectly safe and the public may continue to come to the Kota Sentosa market to shop for their needs with good and reasonable prices.

Meanwhile, MPP distributed more than 1,000 flyers about Covid-19 prevention to business premises, including traders and hawkers, under its jurisdiction as part of its Covid-19 public awareness campaign.

“The council started the campaign in 7th Mile areas because of the confirmed cases which occurred in the nearby Sentosa Hospital, and at the same time, to encourage the public to come to the market too,” Lo said when speaking to reporters during the distribution of the Covid-19 SOP flyers to hawkers, traders and business premises in Kota Sentosa, today. — DayakDaily

Kuching: Four flyovers to be completed next year

Kuching: Four flyovers to be completed next year.

KUCHING (August 4): Work on the constructions of four flyovers at the fourth, sixth, seventh and 10th mile on Jalan Kuching-Serian are all expected to solve the traffic congestion problem here after they are completed in June next year.
Batu Kitang State Assemblyman and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang today said the flyover at the fourth mile was expected to be the first to be completed and to be opened to traffic in November this year.
‘’We expect the three other flyovers to be completed in June next year. All the flyovers are part of the Pan Borneo Highway package worth RM2.1 billion from Sematan until the 10th mile,’’ he said when visiting the flyover project at the fourth mile here.
He said that, when completed, the four flyovers, ranging from 300 metres to 400 metres long, would be able to smoothen further traffic flow for about 80,000 vehicles in this city as there would not be traffic lights along the stretch.
‘’The completion of this project (at fourth mile) was delayed for about one year. However, the contractor for the project was given an 84-day extension to complete the project under the Movement Control Order (MCO),’’ he said.

Lo: Mile 4 interchange, flyover to open to public by year end

KUCHING (Aug 4): Motorists who use the Mile 4 interchange regularly will be pleased to know that the new interchange and flyover will be open to traffic by the end of the year.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the Mile 4 interchange will be the first to be completed among three other interchanges along the Kuching-Serian Road (KSR) Section project, which is part of the Pan Borneo Highway project.
“This Mile 4 interchange will be operational by the end of the year. Hopefully by November, this interchange, this flyover, will be usable by motorists.
“Of course we have four flyovers altogether (along the KSR Section). The rest of the flyovers will be completed in stages.
“They are expected to be completed by June 2021,” he told reporters after a site visit at the Mile 4 interchange today.
The three other interchanges along the KSR Section are located at Mile 6, Mile 6.5 and Mile 10.
All in all, Lo said the KSR Section costs around RM2.2 billion, starting from Lundu all the way to Mile 10 at Jalan Penrissen. The cost includes the construction of four flyovers, the roads and other road furnitures.
The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman said there were some delays in the completion date of the Mile 4 interchange due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) following the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the contractor was given 84 days of time extension, and has kept to the schedule so far.
As for the KSR Section as a whole, Lo said the expected time of completion is October 2021, revised from the initial target of October 2020 due to the MCO.
