KUCHING, June 24: The public health concerns raised by the presence of a poultry farm at Jalan Rundim 3B at Kampung Quop has caught the attention of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said even though MPP does not have absolute power to determine or move poultry and pig farms to alternative sites, it will find the best solution to resolve the issue once and for all.
“MPP is aware of the complaint, and is in the process of working with other relevant agencies like State Veterinary Services Department, Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB), Department of Environment (DoE) and Land and Survey Department (LSD).
“MPP will work with the LSD, DoE and NREB to find an amicable solution to this (poultry farm) issue,” the Batu Kitang assemblyman asserted when contacted today.
He was asked about the poultry farm at Jalan Rundim 3B at Kampung Quop which was highlighted yesterday by Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Programme (Hidup) founder and chairman George Young Si Ricord Junior who claimed it was affecting 10 households living within the vicinity.
According to George, the poultry farm has been in existence for nearly 30 years and is a nuisance and poses a health hazard to the residents.
Lo also said that LSD is the authority to determine available alternative sites to relocate the poultry farm, stressing that the council only had by-laws to address nuisance which may be applicable to such circumstances.
“MPP will however try to address this issue by working together with these relevant authorities in the interest of our community as commercial and housing developments have rendered animal farming in the vicinity unsuitable and to be resited.” — DayakDaily
