Discontinuation of Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship
KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the discontinuation of Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship was absurd and should not have been done.
He was commenting on secretary-general of the Home Ministry Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim who announced the discontinuation of Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution.
“The federal government does not need to care about this matter and just let us have the autonomy to ourselves.“No, this is bad and a huge mistake. It is an issue which should not be taken lightly. Sarawak should just take back the autonomy if it has resulted to this.
“We will distribute the identification documents and cards to children on our own,” Lo said, adding that he (Alwi) was not thinking straight because these children are God’s children and they were born in Sarawak which means we have to take care of them.
On Friday Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah was disappointed with the decision by the secretary-general of the Home Ministry, Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim to discontinue the Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution.
“In a letter we received on July 22, Alwi mentioned that all cases in Sarawak on the subject matter must be referred to or re-submitted to the Home Ministry for coordination purposes,” she said.
Since the establishment of the committee in 2016, it had received 723 applications out of which 120 applicants had received their citizenship.
