KUCHING: It was a meaningful Father’s Day for Hon Kah Fook, 70, his wife and granddaughters who now reside in a new house in Kampung Kuap.
The house was built courtesy of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Mile 10 sub-branch and Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (Rela) Landeh branch.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the family was living in an old dilapidated wooden house.
“Our SUPP Mile 10 Women chairlady Shirley Pui received a tip from Sarawak Welfare Association about Hon and his family who lived in an old wooden house with one room and a leaking roof with no ceiling.
“This prompted Pui and her team to obtain and provide the building materials to rebuild their house from ground- up, while Rela Landeh chief liaison officer Phillip Kon provided manpower to construct the house during weekends.
“Thanks to their efforts, the construction was completed in three months. I’m glad to see Hon and his family living in better condition,” Lo told reporters after handing over the house key in Kampung Kuap here yesterday.
“The teams have contributed their time, money and resources to make this possible. What amazes me is that even individuals from private sectors as well as the locals here came forward to lend a hand,” said Lo.
According to Kon, the construction began in late March and was completed on May by 15 Rela volunteers as part of its community programme to help those in need.
It was learnt that Hon’s family owns the small plot of land where they have been residing for the past 30 years.
