Look at yourselves, Sarawak DAP told

Look at yourselves,  Sarawak DAP told

KUCHING: State Assemblyman Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang urged DAP to look at themselves before criticizing SUPP after taking power  two years in the government: and failed to keep their promises.

Lo hit at Chong Chieng Jen’s special Assistant, Tan Kok Ping who seems ignorant of the history of Malaysia when he opened his mouth to criticize him when he was commenting on Petronas Chief executive who resigned due to his disagreement with the PM to pay us RM2 billion in sales tax.

“First of all, on the 2019 Federal Budget, the allocation for Sarawak of RM4.346 billion was only 7.94% of the total development budget as compared to RM4.336 billion in 2018. The 2019 Federal Budget does not reflect a fair and equitable allocation to Sarawak despite the promise made by the state Pakatan Harapan to make sure that the Sarawak and Sabah will get 30 per cent of the federal allocation. The PH Budget also failed to mention the 20 percent oil and gas royalty that the Pakatan had promised to give to Sarawak. So what exactly has DAP Sarawak done so sincerely for Sarawak?,” he said.

“Sarawak got a bad deal when the PH took the helm of ruling the country. We were left in the rut even though beautiful promises were made during the PH election campaigns especially in the DAP ceramah. As their PH leader put it, the manifesto is not the Bible and these promises were made because he did not think they would win GE14 anyway. There was also no mention of the allocations for affordable housing projects for Sarawak,” he said.

“The then Pakatan Federal government failed to provide the necessary allocations to ensure Sarawak would be a developed state. What I was most livid about was that allocations that were promised us during the previous government for the development of Sarawak was cut. The Sarawak state government had to step in to help put up the money for these projects- roads, three important bridges and even money for dilapidation schools. Under the PH government, even money for grass cutting in Sarawak was reduced from Rm800million to a mere Rm100million,” he added.

“The three bridge projects that the then PH Federal government withdrew from had a total face value of Rm1.1 billion- RM300million for Rambungan bridge, RM300 million for Batang Igan bridge and RM500 million for the Batang Lupar bridge,” he said.

Worse still, Lo reckoned that when the DAP leaders promised that UEC would be recognized as soon as they took power. Instead, the first thing the Education Ministry did in 2019 was to cut the budget for Tar University College from RM 30million to Rm5.5million and was further reduced to a pitiful sum of RM1 mil! Then come the black shoes, white shoes and swimming lessons in hotel pools.

“So, I am asking Tan Kok Ping, What is there to glorify PH about when the situation in the PH coalition itself was a mess and even today the mess looks even messier. I shudder to think of PH in charge while Covid-19 is on us. Would they still be thinking of who to pass the PM baton to during that period of time? Tan Kok Ping wants to talk about history? Can that be changed? Why talk about those past leaders who are long dead and cannot defend themselves? What did they do to rectify those “mistakes” in their 22-months reign?,” he said.

“All sweet talks to assure the public but when in power, they were more like timid and toothless mice flip-flops after flip-flops occur and they could not convince their PM to allow them to carry out their promises made to the people. What a shame this is on DAP Sarawak and is this the history, Tan Kok Ping wants us to remember?” he asked.

Surprisingly, Lo added that Tan Kok Ping stated that  it did not happen after the PH took over. What did not happen? What were the “problems” which miraculously disappeared after PH took over? And then when they lost power, did the problems surface again?

He said History is history.

“There is no need to go back to history to blame past leaders. We cannot change what happened in World war 1 or World war 11. That is why we called it history to let us learn lessons from it. The PH government wants everyone to believe that all our problems started on 3rd April 2009 when Najib was sworn in as PM. Why then would DAP slander Tun Mahathir when he was PM before 2009? Does Tan Kok Ping still want to talk about history?”

“DAP supported PAS. What about that? Who asked DAP to make all those promises they cannot keep? UEC, Lynas, 50% of taxes returned, 20% of oil returned. Do not underestimate the rakyat. They are smart and can see for themselves the damage  DAP has done after they supported them. Many are disappointed with DAP now. Tan Kok Ping should stop the blame game and eat humble pie. This is hardly the time for you to aim your arrows at anyone who has been working tirelessly for the good of the people of Sarawak,”  he stated.

Instead of attacking SUPP and hoping to gain more brownie points, Lo suggested that it would be better if we stop attacking those who are asking the Federal government to return us what was due to us as the Sarawak state government has been doing even while our beloved TOK NAN was still with us. We in SUPP have never strayed away from our commitment to looking after Sarawakisns’ interests ; not then while we were working as a coalition with BN then and not now as we work  as a coalition with GPS to get back what rightly belongs to us Sarawakians.

Irresponsible stink: Average of 100-200 tonnes of waste illegally dumped in MPP areas annually

Irresponsible stink: Average of 100-200 tonnes of waste illegally dumped in MPP areas annually

KUCHING, June 27: An average of about 100-200 tonnes of bulky and mixed waste such as old furniture, carton boxes, plastics, discarded food, scrap tyres, old appliances, construction debris, garden waste and others are being dumped illegally near residential and commercial areas under the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP)’s jurisdiction annually.

The council and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd are reminding the public to stop dumping their waste illegally at random and obscure locations as the irresponsible act does not only put public health at risk but it is also expensive and laborious to clear.

According to MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang, the issue is getting serious and difficult to eradicate without the public’s cooperation.

The problem is exceptionally ‘chronic’ at Jalan Kangkok, Kuching City Mall, the access road to Kompleks Perumahan Awam Kementerian Pertahanan Malaysia Cawangan Sarawak (6th Mile, off Jalan Penrissen), Jalan Ensing Timur and Kampung Tengah Sungai of Jalan Segubang/Sejijak.

“The clearing process takes time, energy and money. Last year alone, we spent about RM97,000 on clearing illegal dumping spots as we needed to bring in the machinery, backhoes, lorries, labour and so on. The council has spent a lot of unnecessary resources to eradicate the problem when they can be better used to improve other public facilities such as drainage or road improvements,” said Lo in a statement issued here yesterday.

Lo stressed that cleanliness is a shared responsibility and the public should take ownership of their rubbish and practise disposing their waste more responsibly by using their household bins or available bin centres.

“Anyone witnessing any act of illegal dumping in their housing area can also assist the Council by reporting such incidences immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Trienekens’ Division Head for Logistics and Services, Lee Ghee Seng said the company will continue to work with the local councils to create awareness about the dangers of illegal dumping.

“It may seem like an easy and convenient thing to do but the long-term impact on the environment and human health are harmful. If the public have excessive or bulky wastes to dispose of, the waste can be disposed of at the nearest designated bin centres. For those who have renovation waste, larger size containers such as the RoRo containers are also available for rent. This way, waste can be disposed of in a cleaner and safer manner,” explained Lee.

Illegal dumping is an offence under the Natural Resources Environment Board Ordinance and punishable by law. Under Section 30 (1) (a & b), the maximum penalty of RM20,000 is chargeable to anyone found guilty of dumping waste illegally. To highlight any illegal dumping, residents are advised to call MPP at 082-615566 or Trienekens at 082-612300. — DayakDaily

Support GPS to protect state’s rights

Support GPS to protect state’s rights

KUCHING: Sarawakians are urged to support Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to develop the state and protect their rights.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said Sarawakians do not need political parties from Peninsular Malaysia and West Malaysian leaders to fight for the state’s rights and interests.
Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman said he was surprised with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s remark saying that Sarawak might end up bankrupt in three years’ time under the GPS administration if it continues with its huge annual budget.
The DAP secretary-general had said Sarawak’s RM30 billion reserves would run out in three years with its annual budget of RM11 billion.

“Sarawak did not touch its reserves because we have enough revenue from our taxes collections,” said Lo when speaking at the Tematu Gawai carnival and Dayung Gawea Tematu competition held at Kampung Tematu near here on Saturday night.
Lo reminded Lim saying, “Sarawak is not like Penang with an annual budget of almost RM2 billion, while its reserve is less than RM2 billion. So, if based on what Lim had said about Sarawak’s budget, then Penang is a bankrupt state.”
Lo highlighted how the federal government survived with oil and gas resources from Sarawak, adding that Sarawak produced as much as 800,000 boe (barrel of oil equivalent) per day, which is equivalent to RM250 million worth of oil every day for the federal government.
“But where is the money? The federal government didn’t give us enough and for that reason the state government has no choice but to spend our own money to implement our development projects,” Lo said.
Meanwhile, Lo assured his constituents that he would continue to work hard to develop their areas. He revealed that RM1.8 million has been spent for various development projects in the Batu Kitang constituency this year.

A promise made, a promise kept

A promise made, a promise kept

KUCHING: The Sarawak government will finance the proposed waterfront and wetland waterfront projects in Batu Kawa in full, if the federal government refuses to honour the commitment made by the previous administration.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the cost of the proposed project – approved before the 14th General Election at an estimated cost of RM10 million – was supposed to be shared equally by the federal and Sarawak governments.
“However, our partner in Barisan Nasional then lost to Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the general election, and this project is one of the many projects in Sarawak that the PH government has done away with.
“As the government of the day, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will fulfil its promise and therefore, I have approved RM5 million to implement the first phase, which is called the Batu Bawa Waterfront,” he said during the launch and earth-breaking of the project, here yesterday.
Abang Johari said the proposed Batu Kawa Wetland Waterfront, which is an extension of the Batu Kawa Waterfront project, will also cost RM5 million.
He said should the federal government decline to top up the RM5 million allocation that was approved by the previous administration, the Sarawak government would fund the project.
He noted that the proposed wetland waterfront, which is the second phase of the project, is expected to be implemented upon the completion of the current waterfront project.
The construction of Batu Kawa Waterfront has already commenced and is scheduled for completion on May 5 next year.

Abang Johari (second right), flanked by Dr Sim and Lo (left), launches the piling works at the project site.
The chief minister then jested that implementing the project would not result in Sarawak going bankrupt – a clear reference to remarks made by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng last week that the state risks bankruptcy in three years should it continue to be governed by GPS.
“We can do this project with our own money. I say this not to boast, but we have revenue and when we have revenue, we have to share with the people of Sarawak through the implementation of peoples’ projects like this.
“The Batu Kawa old town has some historical value and so we want to upgrade it and make it as a stop centre for tourists, who may cruise along the river from Siniawan Waterfront to here, and then Kuching Waterfront,” he said, adding Sarawak’s projected revenue for this year is expected to surpass the RM10 billion-mark.
Earlier, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the waterfront is going to be a landmark not just for Batu Kawa, but also Kuching.
He said this landmark will allow both locals and tourists to experience the river, villages and natural wetland in Kuching.
“Definitely, it will help (improve) the local economy,” he said.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, was also present at the launching.

‘Finance minister is fearmongering’

‘Finance minister is fearmongering’

KUCHING: “Irresponsible and fearmongering statement by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng!”
That was how Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang responded to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s claim on Friday night that the state Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government would go bankrupt in three years’ time due to its large state budget.
“How can we trust Lim and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government when he as the Finance Minister can make such irresponsible statement which is misrepresenting, misleading and fearmongering the people of Sarawak and investors, all for the sake of his political mileage. It goes to show that lies and U-turns are the norms of the day for Lim and the PH government.
“He should correct his statement and apologise to the people of Sarawak as well as to stop deteriorating investors’ confidence in Malaysia,” Lo said when met by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Last Friday, Lim stated, “The State Budget (of Sarawak) is RM11 billion while the state reserves is RM30 billion. If every year you spend RM11 billion, in three years’ time, you’ve got nothing left.”
Responding to this, Lo expressed his disappointment with Lim for trying to mislead Sarawakians into believing that the GPS government had failed them.
“In fact, the GPS government is the only government that Sarawakians can depend on to look after their interests and to bring back the wealth of Sarawak as well as to regain the rights of Sarawakians as enshrined under Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said.
Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, added that such statement reflected the irresponsible behaviour of a Finance Minister.

In perspective, Lo stated that Sarawak was the only entity in Malaysia having the highest reserves of RM30 billion.
“No wonder the Malaysian economy is at its worst since he (Lim) took over. The stock market is going down, prices of goods are going up, and foreign investors lack confidence in the new PH government,” he said.
Comparing the state’s reserves to Penang instead, Lo pointed out, “Penang’s reserves is less than RM2 billion. Based on Lim’s intelligent analogy, Penang should have gone bankrupt by now.”
On Nov 5, 2018, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the 2019 State Budget worth RM11.9 billion which will be development-based and rural-focused to stimulate economic activities and progress for the state. Of the amount, RM9.073 billion (76 per cent) is allocated for development expenditures while RM2.841 billion (24 per cent) is for operating expenditure.
Elaborating of how the largest ever State Budget worth RM11.9 billion comes about, Lo stated that the total state revenue for 2019 was projected at RM10.513 billion. The 2019 state revenue estimate is made up of tax revenue expected at RM5.268 billion, or 50 per cent of the total expected revenue in 2019, while the non-tax revenue is estimated at RM4.997 billion or 48 per cent of the total expected revenue.
“In addition, the 5 per cent petroleum tax imposed on oil-related businesses is expected to bring in an estimated RM3.85 billion. All in all, we could generate income more than RM11.9 billion (State Budget). This explains how the government dared to come up with such amount and even so, we did not have to disturb our reserves,” he explained.
Lo further stated, “Before Lim misleads the people of Sarawak further, let’s question him: When is Lim going to give the people of Sarawak the 20 per cent oil royalty, the 50 per cent of all tax collected and the autonomy of health and education, as promised before the last 14th General Election (GE14)?”
“Every day, RM250 million worth of petroleum is being siphoned from the land of Sarawak, only to benefit Malaya with only 5 per cent return to Sarawak. After taking the RM250 million from Sarawak, Lim still has the cheek to mislead Sarawakians into believing that we are poor when in fact, we are extremely rich. If RM250 million (petroleum) a day stays in Sarawak, I see no good reason to be kind to Lim and his Malayan partners.
“Sarawak should continue to increase its petrol tax from 5 per cent to 10 per cent and up to 20 per cent or even more, so that we can carry out even more development projects for the people of Sarawak. After all, this is what Lim promised to the people in many of his speeches before the GE14.”
“Let us Sarawakians pull ourselves together and unite under GPS, under the leadership of Abang Johari to tell our ‘Malayan masters’ that Sarawakians want control over our oil and gas resources, autonomy in health and education as well as all the rights of Sarawakians as enshrined in MA63,” Lo concluded.

Traders at parking lot to move to designated temporary hawker centre – Lo

Traders at parking lot to move to designated temporary hawker centre – Lo

KUCHING: Some 200 parking lot hawkers scattered around Lee Ling Commercial Centre at Emart Matang will move to a designated temporary hawker centre opposite the RHB Bank there.
Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Cr Lo Khere Chiang said these hawkers will slowly come and trade there.
Currently there are 79 trading lots provided and 21 hawkers have been identified.
“The issue is that there is trading all over the place, a lot of complaints. So this is the best place, move everybody down here,” he said when met at the temporary hawker centre yesterday.
Asked if these traders are illegal, he said as the council allows them to trade at the temporary hawker centre, they are not illegal anymore but those trading outside the centre are illegal.
He hopes that one day the centre will be like the one in MJC, which started with only seven stalls but has about 400 stalls now.
In the long run, he told the traders to form a committee and work together with the council to organise programmes to encourage people to come to the centre, thereby bringing business to the traders.
“I’m happy because they are helping themselves. They are not just sitting around for government to come in with money and assistance. They set up stalls doing business, making money. This is the way to go. So the government comes in to assist, give them peace of mind to trade, help them organise, so the traffic is not jammed.
“This is what the government of the day should do. That is what we are doing. And I’m taking one step further, do (hold) programmes. Together with YB (assemblyman) of the area (Fazruddin Abdul Rahman), we will do programmes, promote the place and eventually they have good business and don’t want to move out anymore.”
Asked if the centre will be made permanent, Lo replied in the negative, saying it is not a hawker centre nor a market but car park.
“I shouldn’t say permanent place. But again, like (in) MJC (where traders) have been trading for 10 years. You call that permanent or not? But you can’t. One fine day, they have to move. But that is in the future. There will be a big market coming up, hopefully one day, which can house all the 400 hawkers.”
Lo visited the temporary hawker centre to take a closer look at the place personally, and to speak to the traders who had moved there and enquire how they found trading at the new place.
He was there with PMC Market and Licensing Standing Committee chairman Cr Wilfred Yap and other council staff.

Rajah Charles Brooke Memorial Hospital may be a `heritage site’ soon, says rep

Rajah Charles Brooke Memorial Hospital may be a `heritage site’ soon, says rep

Lo ( second left) placing an offering on the altar used for the `miring’ ceremony. With him are Jong (second right), Jimbun (right ) and a Shaman.

KUCHING, June 15: Rajah Charles Brooke Memorial (RCBM) Hospital is awaiting the State Cabinet approval to be gazetted as a heritage site.

This was revealed by Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang when he officiated at the `Miring Gawai 2019’ held at RCBM Leprosarium in Mile 13, Jalan Borneo Heights, here, today.

Lo said the hospital, which was once a place to treat lepers, is a historical legacy left behind by the White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak from 1841 to 1946.

“The Brookes left many historical sites in Kuching, such as the Astana, Fort Margherita, old Court House and now RCBM. Once (RCBM Hospital is) gazetted, it will be good for tourism, especially in Padawan area,” said Lo, who is Padawan Municipal Council chairman.

A warm, traditional welcome for Lo to officiate at the `miring’ ceremony organised by the Heritage Society of RCBM Hospital.

Dancers dressed in traditional Iban attire in a photocall with Lo (standing centre) after he officiated at the `miring’ceremony.

On the `miring’ (a ritual offering to ancestors and spirits) ceremony, he lauded the Heritage Society of RCBM Hospital for organising the event and for observing the Iban culture. Such an initiative is very important, especially for a multiracial society like Sarawak, to enhance unity and understanding among the people.

“If we don’t preserve our cultures, then it is meaningless, as they are the soul and identity of our different communities,” he highlighted.

In commending the Society’s chairperson Angie Jong for a job well done, Lo hoped the event would be an annual affair to gather the different communities together.

It’s everyone’s problem

It’s everyone’s problem

Final of a four-part special series on the drug scourge

Combating drugs needs a collective effort, says Puspen volunteer
KUCHING: Lee Chia Soon, a volunteer with the Kuching National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), helps out with the organising of programmes for drug addicts.
His dream of creating an anti-drugs video clip was achieved and launched two months ago with the cooperation from AADK.
With a group of his fellow volunteers, they came up with the second clip recently.
The clip titled ‘Tong Gas” (gas cylinder) was a cynical look at missing gas cylinders in villages, a common occurrence.
Gas cylinders were mostly stolen by drug addicts to feed their habit. The video encourages parents to report their children suspected of being drug addicts, to help them.
In one month, it has obtained 70,000 hits and Lee said more parents were reaching out to the authorities for help.
Lee added that almost everyone had a mobile phone and instead of talking to 200 people in the village, it was best to reach out to all through digital media.
“We can easily reach 5,000 people a day through digital media.”
Lee, who has too often seen the negative impact of drugs, said drugs were easily available in many villages.
“It is a fact and we must not hide it. Due to the peddlers who are mostly thugs, many people dare not report them.”
“Maybe the kampung community leaders can do something, by working with the authorities concerned. However, it is best that parents themselves help their children by reporting them as soon as they know they are on drugs. A new drug addict can kick his habit easier than one who has been hooked on drugs for years,” he said.
Lee is also worried about how cheap drugs are now. “I know of young girls on drugs, and to feed their addiction, they sell their bodies to get cash. There is no ending to the horrors of drug addiction.”
His interest in helping out came about following a personal experience where he helped a neighbour kick the habit several years ago. He is so glad to see the youth, who was shunned by other neighbours, studying in college today, pursing his dreams.
From then on, Lee wanted to ‘save’ more children – not out of popularity but how to solve a complex problem such as drug addicts affecting the community.
His chance came one day while working, he met a staff member from the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen). Lee asked if he could help out and be a volunteer.
“I believe that we can combat drugs if we work towards a collective way to solve it. We can do it with the cooperation of police, AADK, education department, local councils, NGOs, religious bodies and community leaders.
“The enforcement must be stronger and more aggressive. If all of us work towards that common goal with one mind, we can do it,” he said optimistically.
