Minimise food wastage, says MPP chairman

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said its waste minimisation initiative requires full commitment and cooperation from all parties to achieve it.
According to him, the council will as usual provide bins for all their Ramadan bazaar traders and encourage them to minimise food wastage.
Lo who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman said in actual fact, there is very minimal food waste at the Ramadan bazaars, as most foods are cooked and sold to consumers who bring the food home (takeaway) to eat with their families.“Approximately 3,700kg of waste per day comprising of sugar canes, cooked food and plastics were collected from the seven Ramadan bazaars namely Kota Padawan Ramadan Bazaar, MJC Ramadan Bazaar, Kota Sentosa Ramadan Bazaar, Taman Malihah Ramadan Bazaar, Matang Jaya Ramadan Bazaar, Lee Ling Commercial Centre Ramadan Bazaar and Emart Ramadan Bazaar,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.
“Nevertheless, I call upon all of us, consumers and traders alike, to be conscious of the amount of waste generated to further reduce food wastage,” he said.
He also urged the traders to donate their leftovers and unsold food to mosques and charity organisations.
At the same time, Lo pointed out that the council, together with the Health Ministry, would carry out inspections at all these Ramadan bazaars to ensure cleanliness and health remain their top priority.
On a different matter, he noted that the council has not received any reports on food poisoning.
