MPP chairman: RM7.46 million to address flood issue at Stakan river

Lo speaking to reporters after inspecting the Stakan river flood mitigation project site today.

KUCHING, May 13: The RM7.46 million Stakan river flood mitigation project will help to address the flood issue in 7th Mile.

According to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, the project’s objective is not just to solve the flooding problem but also to protect properties on both sides of the river.

“Through this project, we will have a big waterway that acts as a huge reservoir to contain water during heavy rain.

“I hope we can minimise the flooding issues in the 7th Mile old bazaar,” he told reporters after meeting with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) personnel at the project site in Stakan Lorong 3 today.

Lo said the project involves widening the existing drainage along the river from three metres to 12 metres.

He added that a concrete wall would be constructed for both sides of the river.

Meanwhile, Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said the repair works for the damaged road in Taman Matang Jaya 3 will commence as soon as possible.

He said the Public Works Department (JKR) is aware of the issue, and an appointed contractor will carry out repair works.

He pointed out that the previous contractor involved in the road project had been terminated.

“This is because while constructing the road, the contractor has realigned all the drainages and moved the ditch in the wrong place, which caused the landslides, thus damaging the road,” he explained. — DayakDaily

Mangsa sindiket penipuan kerja di Kemboja dakwa dianiaya, diancam
Lo Khere Chiang bercakap pada sidang media di Pusat Khidmat Dun Batu Kitang. - Astro AWANI

Lo: Be vigilant against job offers promising lucrative salaries

Lo: Be vigilant against job offers promising lucrative salaries

Lo (left) meets with the family members of the scam victims.

KUCHING (May 7): Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang cautions the public, especially youths, to be vigilant against Cambodian job offers promising lucrative salaries.

He said parents should also play their part in advising their children not to fall victim to job scams, adding there were no easy way to gain lucrative income.

“Money doesn’t fall from the sky. We all have to work hard to earn our money.

“As such, I would like to advise parents to tell their children not to look for easy money so that they will not be cheated (by job scams), thinking the future is brighter (if working) outside Malaysia.

“When a person tells us there’s easy money to earn, and millions of dollars to be made out there, don’t believe them. Nothing is free in this world. We need to work hard for a living,” he told a press conference at his service centre in Mile 6, Jalan Penrissen here yesterday.

He said this following six Sarawakian individuals aged between 19 and 38 who fell for a job scam in Cambodia.

Lo said he was told by the family members that the victims managed to get into contact with them, but only for a brief moment, to inform them of their conditions; that they were mistreated.

He thus called on collaboration between the leaders of Malaysia and Cambodia as well as the police from both countries to assist in bringing the Malaysians home safely.

In a press conference on April 25, it was announced that the Malaysian police would seek the assistance of Interpol under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal to track the six Malaysians.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department has opened two investigation papers under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

“We have received six police reports between April 20 and 22, 2022 from family members of the victims, who are said to have been cheated into working in Cambodia.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that all six victims had been offered job opportunities in Cambodia by an agent. They then went to Cambodia but once there, they were forced to do fraudulent work at a call centre,” said Azman.

He reiterated the police call advising people against being fooled by lucrative job offers advertised and promoted over the internet, especially on social media.

“Many syndicates usually advertise such jobs in newspapers, and via Facebook, WhatsApp and WeChat apps, offering lucrative salaries and various facilities to draw people to contact them.

“This is why the police have repeatedly warned the public before ever committing anything to these so-called ‘agents’, that they must thoroughly check the validity of the job offers, which can be done through the PDRM portal at www.rmp.ov.my, or by calling our secretariat. Check if these job offers really exist or if the agents are legitimate,” he said.

Katanya, sehingga kini projek hanya mencapai 20 peratus siap.

— DayakDaily

Let’s do our part during Earth Hour

Let’s do our part during Earth Hour

KUCHING: Everybody, lights off this March 26!

In conjunction with the upcoming Earth Hour event on March 26, Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is appealing to the local community to switch off their lights.

This is the first time PMC is participating in the Earth Hour event.

“The goal is to help raise awareness around the globe of our energy use, consumption, impact and long-lasting effects on the environment. Earth Hour is a movement to help our future and encourage urgent change around the world,” he said in a statement yesterday (Mar 24).

He said the consumption or wastage of electricity was contributing to the earth’s rise in temperature.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman also pointed out the importance of the Earth Hour because climate change and global warming posed an extreme challenge as wildlife and plants faced extinction.

“This includes us, so we need to do our bit to protect the planet!

“You can take part and make an impact wherever you are in the world. People’s circumstances are different all around that world, but wherever you are, you can make an impact,” he said.

He called upon the community to take part in activities that contributed to the raising of awareness such as turning off lights during Earth Hour, candlelight dinner, joining the Earth Hour video stream, film night, indoor scavenger hunt, and Earth Hour word search and poster colouring.

Earth Hour is an annual event first introduced in 2007 in Sydney Australia, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a form of encouragement to individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off all non-essential lights for an hour between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said he hoped the proposal will be approved so that work can start immediately.

“I have approached the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and hopefully they will be able to help me to construct a bigger monsoon drain along the main Datuk Kalong Ningkan Road,” he told reporters when met after visiting Wawasan Recreational Park, Arang Road today (March 9).

He said the priority is a bigger drain along Datuk Kalong Ningkan Road to prevent flash floods.

“Besides this, there are many things that still need to be done, and I am also trying to take care of major soil erosion and other drainage problems.

“I am hoping we will have more money so that we can improve all the dilapidated drains in the housing area,” he said.

Lo, who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman, said speaking of money, he is glad that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is smart in looking for extra revenue for the state.

“With the grant allocated by the GPS government, we are able to improve and implement projects,” he said.

He added that annually, MPP has implemented more than 200 to 250 minor projects while the bigger projects such as roads, drains, and bridges are done by the Public Works Department (JKR) and Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID).

Lo chides Chong over native proposal

Lo chides Chong over native proposal

KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has chided his Padungan counterpart Chong Chieng Jen over his proposed amendment to the Interpretation (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

He said that Chong was a very irresponsible person to raise such a suggestion.

“We are not natives of Sarawak, we have to accept the fact that we are not native of Sarawak.

“But we are citizens of Sarawak, we share the same IC and receive allocations from the government.

“So, most importantly, whether we are native or not native in Sarawak, we are all citizens, born, live and die here,” he told reporters when met at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex on Tuesday.

Lo said it was important to recognise and respect the natives of Sarawak.

Earlier, Chong had proposed an amendment to the Bill under Standing Order 50 (4) and 54 whereby, “Clause 2 of the Bill be amended by inserting immediately after the word ‘Vaie’ in the new line, the words ‘Chinese, Indian, or any race not stated herein and the person of which race is born in Sarawak and whose natural parents or either or one the natural parents is also born in Sarawak.”

Commenting further, Lo said that Chong already had a big house, was rich and questioned what more he wanted.

“Do you want to be native of Sarawak just to take the inheritance of Sarawak? I don’t think you need to, you are rich enough,” he said.

In Sarawak, he added the people have been living in peace and harmony and this must be preserved.

“So, what Chong proposed, I do not agree,” he said.

Lo: ‘Premier’ post will distinguish Sarawak from peninsula states

Lo: ‘Premier’ post will distinguish Sarawak from peninsula states

Lo is seen in a screenshot of the live proceedings.

KUCHING (Feb 15): The proposed amendment to change the designation and style of the name of the Chief Minister’s post to ‘Premier’ is a good starting point to differentiate Sarawak from states in Peninsular Malaysia, said Lo Khere Chiang.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman asserted that the state deserves the title of ‘Premier’ as an important first step towards regaining and achieving all that is listed under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“We are now flexing our muscles by amending the word ‘Chief Minister’ to ‘Premier’ to identify ourself to be different from all the other chief ministers, including Penang, in the federated states of Malaya.

“I implore all Sarawakians to stand together and to support this historical move,” he said when debating the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2022 today.

In expressing his support for the proposed amendment Bill, Lo commented it has been a long and tedious journey to get to where the state is now.

He pointed out that it is only through the perseverance and patience of the state’s leaders that Sarawak has reached this stage.

“I must say, Sarawak is indeed on the right track moving towards better days with (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri) Abang Johari (Tun Openg) at the helm,” he said.

With the Inter Government Committee (IGC) report, Lo said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will ensure that the details of what is Sarawak’s entitlement will be regained in stages.

He asserted that the federal government should know that GPS can win handsomely as it emphasises on the people first.

“Our Chief Minister is a visionary leader who can and will bring Sarawak to be on par with global achievements, and with our entitlements returned, this can become a reality. Our Chief Minister has done a lot of foundation work for Sarawak.

“Although the process may seem slow at first, we are moving forward despite the many hurdles in front of us. With persistence, patience, and grit, Abang Johari has made Sarawak financially independent.

“As seen from his capability, our Chief Minister is not only visionary but enterprising. He knows that with financial independence, Sarawak can be strong politically to do more for Sarawakians. We are getting stronger day by day and with Sarawakians living in harmony, we shall certainly emerge a champion within Malaysia,” he said.
