KUCHING (May 3): Locals and visitors are invited to experience the colours and rhythms of Sarawak’s Dayak heritage at Gawai Ba Podium, an urban cultural celebration held over two weekends — May 2 to 4 and May 9 to 11 — at The Podium here.

The event offers a vibrant fusion of tradition and modernity, bringing the spirit of Gawai Dayak into an accessible city setting.

Organised by Woo Woo Whimsy in collaboration with The Podium, the festival showcases Dayak culture through interactive exhibits, performances, and artisanal markets.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang officiated the launch, which opened with a dynamic Iban drum performance by Kumpulan Gendang Pampat Peruji Ati (KGPPA), igniting the festive atmosphere.

“We are very fortunate in Sarawak. Throughout the year we celebrate so many festive occasions — Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Thaipusam, Christmas — and now, Gawai.

“Let’s come and enjoy ourselves. Have a great time as we celebrate Gawai together,” he said.

The festival features 36 vendors offering traditional crafts, handmade beadwork, heritage décor, home-cooked delicacies, and Gawai-themed treats. Visitors can also enjoy cultural dances, sape music, storytelling, fashion showcases, children’s workshops, and more — all free and family-friendly.

Following the success of the recent Heritage Market, Lo also praised event organisers Jeremy Veno and Shalane Matthew for their dedication in promoting Sarawak’s cultural richness through creative platforms.

Spanning six days across two weekends, Gawai Ba Podium invites the public to explore, engage, and celebrate indigenous culture at the heart of the city.
