KUCHING: Army personnel and veteran members of the armed forces joined the public in a collective effort to donate blood for a noble cause.

The blood donation drive took place at the Indian Association Kuching (IAK) Hall on today (Jul 13), with participants arriving as early as 8am to contribute.

The drive was organised by the Persatuan Veteran India Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (PERIM) Sarawak in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs Sarawak Branch and Blood Bank of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Its president Rajendran Vadiveloo said the blood donation drive was held in conjunction with the Warrior’s Day, which is celebrated annually on July 31.

“Every year, we organise similar events with the aim to help increase the blood supply for our hospital,” he told reporters when met.

He added that as of 10.30am, 80 bags of blood have been collected, with a target of reaching 120 bags by the end of the drive.

“The attendance has been very good so far. Compared to previous years, this year has been better. We expect to reach our goal of 120 donors,” he said.

Rajendran said the association will continue the tradition of organising the blood donation drive next year.

“I also want to take the opportunity to thank the participants which included veterans of the armed forces, their families and the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, the event also saw Ranger Corps Veterans Association (PVTKR) advisor Lieutenant-General (R) Datuk Stephen Mundaw handing over donations to the several members of PERIM Sarawak.

Among those present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang Branch chairman Sih Hua Tong, Ranger Corps Veterans Association (PVTKR) advisor Lieutenant-General (R) Datuk Stephen Mundaw.
