Prepare for possible rise in Covid-19 cases this month, local govts told
KUCHING: Local authorities throughout the state have been told to prepare for the possibility of an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in their respective areas this month.
Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said with the current school holiday as well as the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations, more people are expected to travel to and from Covid-19 red zones in the country which could trigger a spike in infections.
“Although we do not advise Sarawakians to travel to and from the Covid-19 red zones, there might be some who do so which is why I have asked the local governments to be ready because they too are serving as frontliners to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“We must not be complacent,” he told reporters following his ministry’s 2019 Excellence Service Award ceremony, here yesterday.
He added that this month is a critical period not just for local governments but all relevant authorities in ensuring that there would not be another spike in cases in Sarawak.
“We must be grateful that Sarawak is the only state in the country which is seeing a decrease in Covid-19 cases. We do not want to be like Canada, where the country is seeing a huge increase in Covid-19 cases recently despite having a low number of cases for so long before this.”
Dr Sim also called on Sarawakians to cooperate in the effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 by staying put in their respective Covid-19 zones.
Earlier, the ceremony saw 125 recipients presented excellence awards while winners of a photography contest organised by the ministry, which had attracted 235 participants, also received their prizes.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Local Government and Housing Ministry permanent secretary Datu Antonio Kathi Galis, Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang were among those who attended.
