KUCHING (Feb 28): Sarawak Heart Centre has the potential to be among the top 10 specialised cardiology hospitals in the Asia-Pacific region if the state is given more funds and autonomy, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.“Last year, our Heart Centre (according to) Newsweek said that we are top 100 in the Asia-Pacific (region). Give us the opportunity, a lot of Sarawakians can do that.

“If the federal government gives us enough money, we could achieve top 10,” he said at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang 8th Anniversary and Chinese New Year Gala Dinner last night.

Dr Sim, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, reiterated that Sarawak Heart Centre was also the only public hospital from Malaysia to make the list of top 100.

“We (the Sarawak Heart Centre) are not the biggest (in Malaysia). We are not the oldest, the oldest in Penang (but) they are not in the top 100.

“So, (this shows) we can do it. Give us the opportunity, give us our power back,” he said, adding the Sarawak Heart Centre has provided treatment to 245,000 people in the last 22 years.

On another matter, Dr Sim called on Sarawakians to continue supporting Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg whose policies not only enable Sarawak to increase its revenue but also earned the state more respect and admiration.

On behalf of SUPP, he thanked supporters whose support enabled SUPP candidates to win in the last state election and become elected representatives in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

Meanwhile, Batu Kitang assemblyman and SUPP Batu Kitang chairman Dato Lo Khere Chiang said Sarawak is making steady progress under the capable leadership of Abang Johari as the Premier.

“We need to have a very stable government . We need every Sarawakian to be united under GPS and with one voice, demand for our rights and our autonomy on health and education back to Sarawak.

“Here, I would like to thank our very own Deputy Premier Yang Berhormat Prof Dr Sim for actively advocating for more health facilities, more heart centres and more importantly for Sarawak’s health autonomy from the federal government,” he said.

Batu Kitang rep to apply funding from S’wak govt to build fire station after not making the cut under Putrajaya

By Shikin Louis

KUCHING, Feb 11: Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang will continue to push for a fire station to be built in his constituency with the funding requested from the State government.

This came after the Batu Kitang constituency didn’t make the cut when the Federal Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) revealed plans to build new fire stations in Sarawak, including Batu Kawa and Kota Sentosa constituencies.

“I have been working with an architect to initiate the construction of a fire station in Batu Kitang. Once the planning is done, we will propose to the State Planning Authority for approval.

“I cannot wait for the federal government—it is too long. They have promised many things, but it is never done,” he told reporters during a Chinese New Year (CNY) open house at his residence here today.

Elaborating on the progress, Lo explained that his team had identified a piece of land in Batu Kitang, which would be a strategic site for the construction of the fire station.

On Nov 6, 2023, Federal Minister of Local Government and Housing, Nga Kor Ming, during the official opening of Asajaya Fire Station in Kota Samarahan, revealed that the ministry has approved RM13.2 million to enhance firefighting and rescue services in Sarawak.

The sum, he said, covers the construction of the Sungai Asap Fire Station and firefighter quarters at Tatau Fire Station and Daro Fire Station for this year.

Additionally, the ministry plans to build new fire stations in Tanjung Manis, Julau, Lubok Antu, Batu Kawa and Kota Sentosa. — DayakDaily

KUCHING (Jan 3): The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) has presented a grant of RM102,000 to SK Sacred Heart in Padawan for the purchase of classroom cabinets and improvement works.

The grant was presented to the school board at Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang’s office. Among those present were the school principal Magdalene Lilawati and school board chairman Thomas Gown.

Lo explained that the responsibilities of Unifor have been expanded into providing assistance to mission schools and it is the only such government organisation in the country to support the operation of non-Islamic houses of worship and mission schools.

“Unifor is not just helping churches or rebuilding churches but Unifor now extends its legs and arms into helping mission schools,” said Lo during the grant presentation yesterday.

The assemblyman also informed that mission schools were not financially supported by the federal government unlike their national school counterparts; thus it was decided that Unifor would render such assistance.

On another matter, Lo thanked the federal government and the Education Ministry for allowing politicians from the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government to enter school compounds to attend activities.

With the state government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Lo also hoped the federal government could return education autonomy to the state to ensure school children are properly taught on the history of the country’s formation and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Lo (fourth right) with the 2024-2025 elected committee.

KUCHING (Dec 23): Landowners at the Borneo Highlands have been told to register with the Borneo Highlands Resident Club (BHRC) if they haven’t done so.

BHRC chairman Dato Lo Khere Chiang said their inability to complete the list of landowners could hinder the distribution of vital information.

“BHRC serves as the communication centre between the landowners and government agencies or departments. Unfortunately, we do not have the complete list and contact details to disseminate important information,” he said in a press statement issued after the club’s second annual general meeting (AGM) dinner here on Wednesday.

Lo pointed out that a registered resident can play a significant role in the future development of the Borneo Highlands Resort.

“I think as residents of Borneo Highlands, it is our duty to do what is best for BHRC. Please spread the word to lot owners who are not yet members about the benefits and privileges of being members of BHRC,” he added.

BHRC’s objectives include safeguarding the rights of residents and property owners; ensuring security services; updating authorities on infrastructure improvements; generating income for club operations; and organising cultural and recreational activities.

On the AGM, 30 people including committee members, residents and their spouses attended. The meeting tabled various committee reports as well as the election for the 2024-2025 committee.

Being an officially registered club under the Registrar of Societies since 2022, Lo expressed his gratitude to members.

“This has been an eventful year. We engaged not only with our members, but also with government agencies such as the Padawan Municipal Council, Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit to fulfil the objectives enshrined in the club’s constitution,” he said.

Unregistered landowners can contact BHRC for further details regarding membership registration via email at 2022bhrc@gmail.com.

Abdul Karim (fourth right) with the ‘Life Senses’ book during the launch. With him are Ting (second left), Lo (left), Raden (second right), Law (fourth left) and other guests.

KUCHING (Dec 12): The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts strives to cultivate an environment where Sarawak’s young talents can flourish, innovate and redefine the boundaries of creative expression.

Its minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this is in view of the ministry’s unwavering support for art, literature, and entrepreneurship.

“As we continue to move forward in time, let us embrace the spirit of creativity, the realm of arts, and the limitless potential for entrepreneurial success.

“These can nurture a generation of aspiring artists and entrepreneurs who are blessed with creativity and ingenuity,” he said when officiating the book launch of ‘Life Senses’ here last night.

He said the ministry also strived to provide a conducive environment where creativity, artistry and entrepreneurial spirit among Sarawakians can thrive.

Abdul Karim, who is also Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, pointed out that the journey of ‘Life Senses’ author Esther Law Lee Poh served as an inspiring testament to the immense potential that lies within the realm of the local creative industry which is progressing well and on par with others in the country and even on the world stage.

“It is exciting for us to witness the unfolding of Esther’s artistic journey and it is our sincere hope that her accomplishments will motivate others and to serve as a shining example for those with similar passion.

“Such attributes will also inspire the entrepreneurial ventures of our young generation,” he said.

Among those present at the launch were Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sebastian Ting, Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, and Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono.

KUCHING (Dec 13): The Neon Trend Market has been officially launched with the lighting of its giant Christmas tree at Lee Ling Heights at Jalan Penrissen here tonight.

The event saw Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who launched the market.

In his speech, Lo underscored the remarkable religious harmony prevailing in Sarawak.

“Religion has never been a big issue among our people in Sarawak. We have to look after the interests of every community and every faith.

“But we must not take things for granted despite the fact that only in Sarawak that we have Unifor, only in Sarawak the GPS (government) takes care of other religions other than Islam, and we can’t find this in any other part of Malaysia.

“It’s all by the grace of God that we have what we have today – a good government that takes care of every religion, every corner of the community,” he said.

In this regard, Lo urged Sarawakians to always appreciate peace and harmony.

“We are grateful that our society comprises various ethnicities and religions that can celebrate their festivities peacefully. Cultural diversity is not an obstacle; it is the foundation of a united and harmonious society based on mutual respect,” he said.

The event saw various communities coming together, including the Malays, Chinese, Ibans, Bidayuhs as well as the Indians, to celebrate the launch of the Neon Trend Market.

Lo took the opportunity to remind everyone to face political and economic challenges with unity and determination to ensure Sarawak’s continued peace and prosperity.

“Christmas is a celebration for all, and I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” he added.

Also present at the event were organising chairman Albert Lee, community leaders and councillors.

Batu Kitang rep grills MPs’ support for MyGaz over State-owned PetrosNiaga

Lo Khere Chiang

KUCHING, Dec 5: Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang has questioned Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen and Sibu MP Oscar Ling’s preference for renewing the subsidised licence for MyGaz instead of supporting Sarawak’s state-owned gas company, PetrosNiaga, which could contribute more to Sarawak’s economy.

In a statement issued today, Lo criticised both the MPs who recently disagreed on Sarawak’s decision not to renew the subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) licence for MyGaz, a Thai-based company.

“My question to both of them is: Which side are you on? Thai or Sarawakian?

“Notably, 60 per cent of Malaysia’s gas reserves originate from Sarawak. Yet Chong and Ling want to support a foreign company, MyGaz, a subsidiary company of Siamgas and Petrochemicals Public Company Limited, a company listed in The Stock Exchange of Thailand to sell subsidised LPG back to Sarawak with profits flowing out of our country back to Thailand.

“Why prioritise renewing the subsidised licence for MyGaz when supporting Sarawak’s state-owned gas company, PetrosNiaga, could contribute more to Sarawak’s coffers? PetrosNiaga, which offers competitive prices, ensures that profits remain within Sarawak for the benefit of Sarawakians,” he claimed.

Lo went on to criticise Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak for consistently advocating the use of Sarawak’s funds and not prioritising Sarawak’s interests in Federal parliament.

“Their efforts could be better directed in the Federal parliament to seek increased allocations for crucial sectors like education, infrastructure, healthcare, and flood mitigation on Sarawak’s behalf.”

Furthermore, the Batu Kitang assemblyman noted that Sarawak, under Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership, has witnessed progress, and PetrosNiaga aims to reclaim Sarawak’s rights and generate employment opportunities.

“After all, at the end of the day, aren’t we all Sarawakians who want to see Sarawak grow in wealth after so much is being taken away from us by Malaya?” alleged Lo.

Lo also drew a comparison between Sarawak and Penang, questioning DAP Sarawak’s loyalties by highlighting the development projects in Penang, such as the undersea tunnel and Light Rail Transport system, while Sarawak lacks similar infrastructure. — DayakDaily
