KUCHING (July 9): Chinese medicine practitioners and businesses should seize the opportunity to make use of Chinese herbs in the tropical rainforest of Sarawak to create business opportunities, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.

KUCHING: The victims of a recent fire incident at Jalan Pearl Park, Mile 3 here have received financial assistance as well as much needed clothes to alleviate their burden.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, through his rural transformation project (RTP) fund, has presented RM200 each to the five affected families.
In addition, the affected families have received clothes from Yayasan Kemajuan Insan Sarawak (YAKIN).
During the care gifts handover ceremony held at Sunny Hill Secondary School today, Lo said that he was touched by all who had contributed to help the fire victims.
“There are six families consisting of about 12 to 15 members who are affected by the blaze. And two of the survivors are teachers from Sunny Hill School.
“So, today, from my RTP, I contribute RM200 to each of the families. It is a small contribution, but I think it is the spirit that counts.
“My small contribution sparks even a bigger contribution. Some have collected thousands of ringgit meant for the victims,” he said.
Therefore, he said was very touched because everybody regardless of their background had come forward to help.
“The sense of volunteerism in the community spirit is very strong. And as a community leader myself, I would like to encourage our community to continue doing volunteer work,” he said.
When asked where the affected families are currently staying, he said some are temporarily staying at a church at Jalan Stapok, while some are staying at their relatives’ houses before they find a new place to rent.
“They (fire survivors) are from other parts of the states and thus they are renting a place here, so we hope they are able to find a new place and they will get there with the help of the community,” said Lo.
Meanwhile, one of the fire survivors, 31-year-old Rosilla Chela said she felt devastated after what had happened.
The teacher of Iban ethnic and from Bintulu, has been teaching mathematics at Sunny Hill Secondary School for five years.
She is thankful that there are no casualties, but is sad that her valuable items are all gone.
“My most valuable items are my certificates, jewellery and others. For instance, money can’t buy back my certificates,” she said, while trying to hold back her tears.
She added that after the fire incidents, the families had received a lot of donations in terms of food, money and clothes from kind donors.
“But now we have to find a new place to stay, and we hope the community or elected representative can help us to find a new place to stay,” she said.
Also present was Sunny Hill Secondary School principal Marilyn Cheng.
On the fire incident, it was reported that on July 3, firemen from the Batu Lintang station were deployed to the fire scene at Jalan Pearl Park, Mile 3 after an emergency call was received around 8.30am, and fire was fully extinguished at 11.05am.
The Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) said that the house, measuring 149 square metres, was completely razed.
KUCHING: Two projects at Taman Sri Permai, RPR Landeh Mile 10 were handed over to the two companies who won the bid.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang was on hand today to witness the project handover to Syarikat Permai Cahaya, represented by Abang Suadi Irfan and Wija Construction Sdn Bhd, represented by Azfairul Jawawi.
Syarikat Permai Cahaya will continue Phase 2 of the hall construction while Wija Construction Sdn Bhd will begin construction on the futsal court.
The hall construction cost over RM100,000 and schedule for completion in 16 weeks while the futsal court cost over RM200,000 and scheduled for completion in 24 weeks.
“Once the facilities are built, I hope the residents here, especially the children, will use the facilities properly. Don’t vandalise them.
“We are also planning to build a car park to make it easier for people to park their cars whenever there’s an event in the area,” said Lo.
He reminded the contractors to make sure they do the work professionally. “We will fully support contractors who really do their job and do it well.”

KUCHING, July 7: Studying in Chinese vernacular schools doesn’t make one less Malay, Iban or Bidayuh, says Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
In pointing this out, Lo said SJK Chung Hua Mile 10 has one of the largest student enrolment among Chinese schools in Sarawak and 42 per cent of its students are Bumiputera.
“It goes to show that Sarawakians can accommodate, adapt and live harmoniously with each other,” Lo told reporters when met after the launching ceremony for SJK Chung Hua Mile 10’s new kindergarten building here today.
Lo said by sending their children to Chinese vernacular schools, Bumiputera parents are not only being practical, but they also recognised the education standard provided by these schools.
Apart from that, he pointed out that being fluent in more than one language is also an asset when the children grow up because modern business is borderless, such as international business transactions with China, Australia, Singapore and many others.
The new kindergarten consists of a two-storey building with six classroom and was built at a cost of RM520,000.
Currently, only two classroom are open for a total of 50 students (25 each) while the rest are used as a teachers’ room and for other purpose. — DayakDaily

Razaili (seated centre) and members of the PAC in a group photo.
KUCHING (June 22): The Sarawak Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will try to visit at least one development project site this year to check how public funds were utilised, said its chairman Razaili Gapor.
He explained that this proposal was discussed during the two-day 54th PAC Meeting which was held since yesterday (June 21) at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building.
“One of those ongoing projects that we plan to visit is the Bario Rice Industry Development Project,” he said in a statement.
Razaili, who is Beting Maro assemblyman, is the new Sarawak PAC chairman, having taken over effective February this year from Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo who is now Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development I.
Other members of the PAC are Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong, Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh and Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat.
Razaili in the statement congratulated them on their appointments as members of the PAC.
It was also announced the PAC new secretary is Pele Peter Tinggom, who is also DUN Secretary.
“The PAC members were also reminded of the importance of their responsibility to ensure public money is spent prudently and achieving the objectives set for expenditures or projects that have been approved by the state and federal governments,” he added.

PADAWAN: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said facilities in tourist areas here should be improved to provide more comfortable access to visitors.
“Coming into the Kampung Git area, the road is very narrow,” he said, adding, “I hope that the access to Kampung Annah Rais, Temurang, Danu and other villages could be improved as well.”
He hoped Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will consider allocating funds to improve these tourism locations.
Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman made this remark at the closing of the Padawan Raft Safari 2022 at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Git, today.
He noted that there were limited parking spaces and hoped to get allocations to improve the parking areas and also widen the road within the Kampung Git area.
Lo also hoped to have a viewing platform built so that visitors could come and enjoy the programme, considering the rafting and kayaking event is held annually and expected to bring in more visitors.
This year marked its 18th edition and saw the participation of about 83 raft teams and 17 kayak teams after a two-year pause.

KUCHING: Local authorities here appear to have different views on the decision to fully enforce the ban on the use of plastic straws and polystyrene at markets and hawker centres effective July 1.
The Kuching Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has warned that hawker centres under its jurisdiction still found serving drinks using plastic straws after the deadline will have their licences to be revoked after the fourth offence.
The news evoked different response from Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang and Kota Samarahan City Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.
Will both these councils emulate MBKS? New Sarawak Tribune interviewed both chairmen this week for their views.
Minos said he never liked the idea of eateries and hawker stalls using plastic straws in Kota Samarahan.
“Actually, I don’t like people using plastic of any kind, including plastic straws because plastic is not good for the environment.
“So it is a matter of time MPKS will emulate MBKS. The Kuching city council is doing it right, a good move and wise of them to impose the ban,” he said.
Lo, on the other hand – while stressing that MPP discouraged the use of plastics and polystyrene off all sorts, and encouraged citizens to recycle plastic bags – said his council would not enforce a total ban on plastic straws.
“We are not enforcing a total ban on plastic straws, however, if that’s the direction of our relevant ministry for all the 23 councils throughout Sarawak, then yes, all of us will have to follow suit,” he said.
Minos also thought that it was good if plastic straws were banned and not used by hawker stalls or any eateries, saying when the relevant ministries fully implemented the anti-plastic policy, MPKS would follow the rules.
“That can be done easily, it is only a question of when to enforce the rules and the fine quantum on those transgressing,” he said.
He, however, said that it was up to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government to impose the anti-plastic straw policy and direct all local councils to enforce it.
Lo explained the practicality of the ban had to be considered, considering that Sarawak was vast and those in the interior couldn’t be expected to use non-plastic straws.
“Padawan Municipal Council takes care of the rural and city areas, and we can’t impose the ban across the board.
“However, through education, I am beginning to see non-plastic straws being used in a number of coffee shops in not just areas under MPP but also major towns and cities throughout Sarawak,” he added.
Asked if MPKS would be much stricter in its enforcement, Minos said “we would sit down with our corporate social responsibility (CSR) team and the staff and. Discuss how to go about with enforcing the ban”.
“After that, we will refer to the ministry, and if everything goes well, we will then spring into action,” he said.
Lo, meanwhile, was concerned whether the people were ready for the ban across the board.
“If and when the community is ready, all the councils throughout Sarawak can just impose the ban. There is no necessity to differentiate between who should and who shouldn’t enforce the ban.
“We are all Sarawakians, and are equally intelligent enough to know that the improper disposal of plastic items is detrimental to our environment and mother nature as a whole,” said Lo.

KUCHING (June 9): Members of the public and well-wishers are urged to donate generously towards the renovation cost of the Sam Shan Kuet Bong Temple in Kota Sentosa.
Batu Kitang and Kota Sentosa assemblymen Lo Khere Chiang and Wilfred Yap Yau Sin are teaming up to solicit funds to renovate the temple, which is more than 100 years old and the last time it was renovated was more than 20 years ago.
“The renovation works will cost more than RM500,000 and we have approached Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to come up with RM200,000 while Flinken Group Sdn Bhd has also come forward to donate 150 bags of tile adhesives costing about RM5,000.
“Yap has also contributed RM10,000 from his MRP grant for the project,” Lo told reporters yesterday.
Lo, also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, said the temple roof was leaking and the tiles cracked.

KUCHING (May 23): Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has been re-elected to lead Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) for another term until 2024.
The Deputy Premier of Sarawak was one of the five top leaders elected by 439 party delegates during the SUPP triennial delegates conference (TDC) held at the party’s headquarters here yesterday.
Datuk Sebastian Ting was re-elected to continue assuming the secretary-general post.
Also re-elected to assume their previous roles were Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem as deputy president and Datuk Francis Harden Hollis as treasurer.
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin is the newly-minted deputy president, the post previously held by Chieng Buong Toon.
The party election saw new deputy secretary-generals – Lo Khere Chiang and Johnny Pang Long Ming.
Datuk Matthew Chen and Adam Yii Siew Sang were re-elected to assume the posts of organising secretary, and information and publicity secretary respectively.
As for the four vice president posts, two newcomers are Chieng Jin Ek and Sih Hua Tong, while Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing and Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii were re-elected to the post.
Michael Tiang and Kho Teck Wan had been re-elected to lead the Youth and Women sections respectively.
Wong Chin Yong is now the assistant organising secretary, while Wilfred Yap is the newly-minted assistant information and publicity secretary.
Out of the remaining 11 Central Working Committee (CWC) members, six are new to the party central leadership.
They are Billy Sujang, Lim Ah Ted, Andrew Victor Nub William Tanyuh, Kua Jack Seng, Peter Pui and Wong Zee Yeng.
The rest are Dato Ting Check Sii, Michael Tiong Hok Choon, Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok, Danny Banjang and Chua Beng Seng.
Speaking at a news conference after chairing the meeting, Dr Sim said the party was supposed to have its TDC last year but had to postpone it due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the State Election.
He said the new leadership will serve until 2024.
“I am honoured that party delegates had elected me to lead for another three years,” Dr Sim added.Dr Sim presents the first prize to Team Fiasco. Lo is at second right.
KUCHING (May 27): The state is facing waste management challenges as the rural population continues to migrate to urban areas, said Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He said improving waste management involves not only government planning and infrastructure, as other stakeholders have to play their part as well.
“The MPP (Padawan Municipal Council) only collects RM20 million a year in assessment from 60,000 houses, and they spend RM8 million for waste management. This excludes grass cutting, street lighting, potholes, repairs and so on,” Dr Sim said at the Mural Wall Art Painting prize-giving ceremony here today.
According to him, this showed Sarawak has tried to keep its assessment rates among the lowest council rates in the country through government subsidies.
He said without the government’s funding for staff and workers’ salaries, MPP would be unable to cover the cost of its services as this exceeded the RM20 million assessment rates collected annually.
He called on everyone to play a role in protecting the environment.
“We need everyone’s effort to make it work. We need to educate the public – you need to do your part and roles. As Sarawak is part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to achieve healthier, sustainable living for the community.
“Last year, during the vaccination drive, when the rubbish collection workers got Covid-19 and people realised there’s nobody to collect rubbish, people realised the importance of rubbish collectors,” he said.
As such, he said awareness campaigns such as the wall mural competition are necessary.
He congratulated organisers MPP, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, and MJC City Development Sdn Bhd for hosting this event.
MPP chairman Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the competition themed ‘My City, My Home, Clean and Green’ was meaningful and urged MPP folk to share the council’s vision and aspirations to keep the city clean, green, and vibrant at all times.
Team Fiasco won the first prize of RM3,000, while second placed Joan Law received RM2,500, and RM1,500 went to Team PSV IGKTAR for coming in third.
There were also five consolation prizes of RM500 each.
