KUCHING: The Welfare Department and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang and Sentosa recently came to the aid of odd job worker Junaidi Abdullah, 65 and his family.

They helped Junaidi , his wife Siti Sa’adah, 53, daughters Siti Mariam 32, Siti Jamayah,20, Siti’s husband Aman Shah Jimmy, 24, and Siti’s daughters aged 23 months and 10 months move out from the top floor of an abandoned building at Kota Sentosa to a temporary shelter at Satok.

Jamaiyah Sulaiman from the Welfare Department said the department would be helping the family with monthly monetary aid, and proper jobs for them and include them in the housing scheme for the hardcore poor.

Junaidi and his family have been living in the abandoned building for the past three months since moving out of a comfortable house in Kampung Haji Baki They used to stay with one of Junaidi’s daughters in Kampung Haji Baki and her family. However, due to family conflicts, Junaidi said he had no choice but to move out with his two other daughters and family.

“I did go around looking for rooms to rent but because there were seven of us, not many people were keen to rent us only a room and it is too expensive to rent a whole house with the mere wages that my son-in law and I earn.

So I scouted around and found this abandoned building and decided to move to the top floor,” Junaidi told New Sarawak Tribune.

The abandoned building, it is learnt, faces a jungle and is a favorite haunt for drug addicts at night. Junaidi and his son-in-law, who is also an odd job worker, tried to make the room as comfortable as possible.

The adults slept on cardboards while Junaidi’s granddaughters slept on an old mattress. As the windows were without shutters, they used plastic sheets they found in dustbins to cover them at night. Junaidi blocked the doorway at night with a plank he found on the ground floor.

During the day, Junaidi and his son-in-law looked for jobs at Kota Sentosa. The women cooked the family meals over a stove they bought after moving out of the house in Kampung Haji Baki.

Although life was hard, Junaidi said they were happy and grateful to be together. During the thunderstorms, he said all of them would get wet as it was impossible to cover all the windows Junaidi said there were drug addicts loitering on the ground floor.

He said it was fortunate that they only went upstairs once but left him and his family alone. “In a way, we did not bother each other. I was worried about the safety of my daughters and granddaughters but I had no choice,”he confessed, adding that his granddaughters were bitten nightly by mosquitoes.

Junaidi’s plight came to light recently when a Sentosa SUPP member from Haji Baki met him in Kota Sentosa and asked how he was.

The member went on to alert Batu Kitang state assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who subsequently informed the Welfare Department.

Lo said he was thankful his branch members and the Welfare acted swiftly to save the family from the dangerous place. “The scheme is to help them live independently.

We have asked for RM250 to assist them monthly and wi scout for a house in Mile 17, Batu Gong which they can rent for RM150 per month.

Meanwhile, the Welfa Department will help them find jobs. Once they are able to do that, they can apply for their own house under the hardcore poor programme’ he said.

Lo added that the Sarawak government’s welfare scheme was good. Instead of giving the poor and helpless “fish”, it was giving them a chance to “fish” for themselves and be independent, he said

Encourage consumers to kick the plastic bag habit, retailers urged

Encourage consumers to kick the plastic bag habit, retailers urged

KUCHING, Jan 31: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is urging businesses to encourage their customers to use reusable shopping bags or recycled plastic bags to help protect the environment.

Its chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, said the council had embarked on a campaign to ban plastic bags while encouraging consumers and businesses under its jurisdiction to opt for the more environmentalfriendly bags.

“We would like to encourage customers to bring their own reusable shopping bags or use recycled plastic bags.

“At the same time, the existing plastic bags should be reused as many times as possible, especially for subsequent shopping trips,” he told reporters after chairing an MPP council meeting here today.

Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said the council had to dispose of thousands of kilogrammes of used plastic bags annually.

He reminded that discarded plastics are hazardous to the environment as well as life threatening to marine life and seabirds.

On MPP’s ban on styrofoam for food and drink packaging in January last year, Lo expressed hope that all coffee shop owners, restaurant, food stall and other premises abide by the ruling.

He said his enforcement personnel would carry out checks from time to time.

Meanwhile, on the four previously declared dengue areas at Arang Road, Jalan Field Force, Kampung Bratan and Kampung Simboh, Lo said only the first two said areas were still considered active dengue hotspots

In this regards, MPP is calling for a more concentrated effort from the public to keep their surroundings clean and to rid of any potential mosquito breeding ground.

“The council has carried out a lot of ‘gotongroyong’ activities, and we are calling residentials, villages, community associations, NGOs (nongovernmental organisations) to carry out ‘gotongroyong’ programmes in their areas to help reduce the threat posed by dengue mosquitoes.

“Do get rid of containers that can become mosquito breeding habitats, such as plastic bottles and cans,” Lo said.

Homes or premises found with mosquitoes breeding grounds could face a maximum fine of RM500, he cautioned. — DayakDaily

Looking into Sarawak Airlines

Looking into Sarawak Airlines

KUCHING: The state government will look into setting up its very own airlines company.

One of the main reasons, according to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, is so that the state could have more direct international fights.

“When we have the additional fund, we will either buy our own airplane or set up our own airlines company,” he said during ‘Experience Sarawak’ Programme at Kopi-O Corner, Jalan Satok, on Sunday night.

He said when Sarawak has its own airlines its tourism industry would get boosted as more foreign tourists would nd it easier to visit the state.

On an unrelated matter, Johari said the increasing number of mass communication graduates who do not have many job opportunities in Sarawak is an important reason for the state government to set up its own television channel/station.

“During a town hall session of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), one of our members asked me how the government can help the youths especially those with art talents. I think it is better that we have our own television channel/station,” he said.

He said the channel/station will it be used to promote Sarawak’s products, create more jobs, and produce more local talents such as television or drama directors.

“We have a few talented movie directors from Sarawak. One is from Sibu who is now in Hong Kong, and one is from Kuching who is based in Hollywood,” he said, adding that we should not forget the famous director and actor Tan Sri P Ramlee from Penang.

“Television is an everyday thing, so we have to create a lot of content for the different segments in the channel. These include news, drama, and information about Sarawak’s economy,” he said.

Look out for discounts, CNY shoppers advised

KUCHING: Saving consistently, avoiding debt, spending wisely and investing for the future to meet family needs in any economic climate are a sure-win formula, according to Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, said this combination of positive habits is an age-old traditional practice of the Chinese community.
He said in the modern context, it means spending wisely.
“Looking out for discounts in supermarkets during all festive seasons is a good start. Compare prices, you would be surprised how price tags can really help you save a lot if you are buying a lot,” he said, adding people must learn to be wise consumers.
“But of course, it is the best thing to do to treat your family to a nice meal,” he said when contacted yesterday.
The assemblyman went on to extend his season’s greeting: “May this Chinese New Year bestow upon you good health, progress and much happiness.
“Let us spread the message of peace and harmony among all races in multicultural Sarawak.
“Happy Chinese New Year and may all our hopes for Sarawak and Sabah come true.”

— DayakDaily

MPP chief to ex-Stampin MP: Be a gentleman and apologise

MPP chief to ex-Stampin MP: Be a gentleman and apologise

KUCHING, Jan 27: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is demanding an apology from former Stampin MP Julian Tan.

He said it was “most irresponsible” and unbecoming for the former MP to blame him and his office for the poor performance of the 15th Mile KuchingSerian Road, which is under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

“The advice of MPP was never sought because JKR Malaysia does not need to seek the advice of the MPP to build federal roads,” Lo said in a statement today.

Furthermore, Lo pointed out, JKR Malaysia and JKR Sarawak were much bigger departments and with more technical expertise than MPP. In addition, MPP was only responsible for state feeder roads.

He insisted that Tan had “maliciously and wrongfully accused” him of being responsible for the poor performance of the road in question.

“For that, I repeat, I expect a proper apology from Tan,” he asserted.

Lo noted that there had been a flurry of activities by former DAP lawmakers of late, and he could not help but wonder if they were making complaints to help Sarawak become a better place for all or if they were just making a lot of noise to gain cheap political mileage.

He said he was amazed at the reaction of Tan to his news publication on Jan 25, where MPP councillors and himself showed concern about the controversial road after a recent fatal accident at the roundabout.

Lo said there had been 400 accidents along that stretch of the road, with 200 of them at the roundabout. Hence, everyone should be concerned.

“I do not understand why Tan is so uptight about pinning the blame on the previous government for this road design.

“I have never said it was about the previous government or the present new government. It is never about the previous or the present new government.”

“What I said, and I repeat, is that it is about the policies of the federal government. Sarawak has been negotiating for administrative autonomy. This is one of the many administrative autonomies that should be returned to Sarawak,” said Lo.

Lo, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, suggested that JKR Malaysia just park their allocation with JKR Sarawak and let Sarawak engage its own local consultants to design and to manage this road.

“JKR Malaysia is too far away to be able to take care of Sarawak matters effectively. Tan, being a Sarawakian, should support me wholeheartedly on this. Together, we should demand for Sarawak’s rights and Sarawak’s administrative autonomy to be given back to Sarawak.

“In this respect, I am of the opinion that I rightly deserve a gentlemanly apology from Tan for putting the blame of the poor performance of this federal road on me and MPP.

“Tan, being a former MP, should be familiar with government procedures and he should be knowledgeable about the separate duties of JKR Malaysia and that of MPP,” said Lo.— DayakDaily

Batu Kitang rep tells Dapsy leader to shut up and fight for Sarawak

Batu Kitang rep tells Dapsy leader to shut up and fight for Sarawak

KUCHING, Jan 25: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has urged DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa to stop making malicious statements about Sarawak leaders and instead get on with the real work to fight for Sarawak’s rights.

“I am quite peeved at DAP Aziz Isa for babbling away, talking nonsense for his political masters in the federal government,” he said in a statement today.

“Sarawak leaders are really working hard for Sarawakians’ best interests. He should instead concentrate on telling his Malayan masters to hurry up and return the oil and petrol money back to Sarawak and Sabah.”

On claims by Aziz that it was Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) who betrayed the rights of Sarawak, Lo said he should realise that the new government was made up of ‘new wine mixed with some old wine’.

Lo quoted the words of Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, who correctly put it that ‘the new government is a mix of new wine and old wine in a bottle ‘capped by an old cork’.

“When Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in the federal cabinet, he never made full use of his executive powers to correct the imbalance of development between Sarawak

and Malaya, despite Sarawak being the biggest contributor to the Malaysian oil and gas revenue,” he stressed.

The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) and Territorial Sea Act 2012 (TSA), he added, were introduced to enable Petronas to siphon Sarawak’s oil and gas.

“Before accusing GPS of being made up of old BN leaders, Aziz should not forget that the new government have accepted former BN leaders into their fray as well.

“Where are PH (Pakatan Harapan)’s credibility and assurance before the election that the new government will implement those new agendas as promised?” Lo asked.

Highlighting that people still felt the pinch from the rising cost of living, Lo reminded that PH had pledged it would take less from Malaysians by introducing tax cuts and lowering living costs.

“Today, prices of goods and materials are going up. Essentials are not coming down and next to none of your election pledges to the people of Sarawak have been fulfilled.

“You, Aziz, should double up on your pathetic efforts and start fulfilling some of your pledges since May 2018, if you are a true Sarawakian,” he added.

Lo said the report from surveys conducted in supermarkets and hypermarkets on Jan 1 was inaccurate and bias as there were various special discounts and promotions being offered due to the festive season.

“Of course, prices will drop because it was done on a day when there were promotions going on. Anyone who has been into a supermarket will know that without having to do a survey.

“Prices for some goods on that day are on special offer, and we cannot take that as the normal price. I am sure prices will drop as well during the Chinese New Year sale,” he said.

Lo criticised that the biased survey, which was done just to prove to the public that prices have dropped, could only generate unreliable, untrustworthy and misleading statistics.

“The survey was done on only one day of the year, and you are trying to fool the public into assuming that is the price for the rest of 2019!” he exclaimed.

Lo reiterated that GPS was a Sarawakbased coalition fighting for all Sarawakians, and, more crucially, GPS need not have to worry about pleasing Malayans who, up till today, have yet to show how they were going to fulfil any of the promises to restore Sarawak and Sabah rights. — DayakDaily

DAP leaders advised to learn Gov’t procedures

DAP leaders advised to learn Gov’t procedures

KUCHING: Stop politicking and be more conversant with government procedures, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang advised two state DAP leaders here yesterday.

He told Stampin MP Julian Tan and former Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chiew to get their facts right before hurling false and malicious accusations against MPP.

“Both of you should be more conversant with government procedures; more so, since you are in the government now.

You should know that this road is under the federal government and not MPP,” he added in response to Tan anc Chiew’s comments on the Mile 15 roundabout along Kuching-Serian road.

Lo also said that Tan and Chiew’s approaches seemed to be once again politicise an already acute situation.

He stressed that the road design was done by the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia and not the state JKR.

“They are trying to confuse and mislead the public into believing that MPP is responsible for the Kuching- Serian road.”

He also noted that there was no necessity to consult MPP, neither was there any requirement to seek approval from MPP as claimed by Tan and Chiew.

According to Lo, the councillors were aware about the issue surrounding the road as they were the closest to the people who used the road daily.

He also disclosed that 400 accident cases were reported along the stretch of road since June 2018 including 200 accidents at the roundabout alone.

“One of my Batu Kitang residents, a hardworking 21-year-old boy has passed on just about three weeks ago,” he added.

Lo said he was made to understand that there was no professional consultant engaged for the road and the design was done in house under the scrutiny of JKR Malaysia.

“Why? This is one good example of Sarawak’s claim for administrative autonomy in which the federal government should not interfere with Sarawak’s administration.

Just allocate the money to JKR Sarawak and let them engage local consultants who know the strengths and weaknesses to design this road.

“It is obvious that the federal government and Pakatan Harapan has once again failed Sarawak, not SUPP, not GPS as alleged by Tan and Chiew,” he added.

Lo suggested that Tan and Chiew should double up on their efforts and start fulfilling some of their pledges since May 2018 instead of being preoccupied with spreading false accusations.
