KUCHING (Sept 1): Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) must embrace creativity and innovation to drive success and stay resilient in today’s fast-paced world, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang.

He said creativity sparks new ideas and allows businesses to tackle challenges from fresh perspectives.

“Without creativity, we wouldn’t have the technology and services we use daily.

“Every business starts with an idea, pushing limits, solving problems, and connecting with customers in unique ways. Creating an environment that values creativity helps businesses adapt and succeed,” he said.

Lo was Lo speaking when officiating at the launch of the Brand Spark Market at tHe Spring Shopping Mall here last Friday.

He highlighted the traditional Sarawak Kek Lapis as an example of incredible creativity, and commended local artisans for promoting traditional crafts and turning them into popular souvenirs.

He said their efforts not only preserve local heritage but also create economic opportunities for the community, adding that innovation is essential for turning ideas into reality.

“Together with creativity, it can transform small concepts into significant achievements,” he said.

He cited Toms Shoes’ ‘One for One’ model, which donates a pair of shoes for every pair sold, as an example.

This innovative approach, according to Lo, sets the company apart by embedding social impact into its business, appealing to consumers who value corporate responsibility.

Lo also mentioned the sago worms as a notable local success story, saying that it turned into a unique sought-after Sarawakian product, showcasing creativity and innovation in both production and marketing.

“By focusing on distinctive local ingredients or cuisine, small businesses can carve out niches in the market and highlight the rich culinary heritage of Sarawak,” he said.

On the Brand Spark Market, organised by the SME Association of Sarawak, it provides a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their brands and products to a wider audience at tHe Spring Shopping Mall until Sept 1.

Lo noted that SMEs add diversity and a personal touch to the market.

“By embracing creativity and new approaches, these businesses can stand out, create value, and make a meaningful impact.

“Encouraging creativity and innovation will help our businesses not just survive, but thrive. This means providing them with the tools and resources to experiment, take risks, and explore new ideas,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of community support, regardless of background.

“With our rich culture and the harmony among Sarawak’s diverse groups, we can share knowledge, collaborate, and celebrate both our achievements and challenges. Together, we can build a culture of innovation that benefits everyone.

“I encourage you to continue nurturing this spirit by supporting local entrepreneurs, buying local products, investing in new ideas, and staying open to unconventional approaches.

“Every great innovation starts with a simple idea and the courage to pursue it,” he said.
