KUCHING, Aug 31: Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah praised the Blessed Church’s running event that has brought over 3,000 members of all ages this morning as an effort to not only promote a positive, active and healthy lifestyle but also strengthen community bonds.
Abdul Karim highlighted that the event was more meaningful as it coincided with the 67th National Day celebration, which fostered a sense of patriotism among the community.
“I am deeply moved when participants sang the ‘Sejahtera Malaysia’ song in unison,” he told reporters after flagging off the 5km and 3km run the the church premises near Jalan Song here today.
Abdul Karim, who is also Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, emphasised that such initiatives aligned with the Ministry’s objectives, especially in empowering youth and encouraging their involvement in building an active society.
“They (Blessed Church) have done an excellent job. You can see that many of those involved in the run and other activities are the youths. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that our youth are well-guided, and running is one of the platforms we support,” he said.
He acknowledged the challenges of guiding today’s youth and preventing them from veering into social issues such as drug addiction.
“That’s why it’s essential for all sectors to play their part in shaping the younger generation into responsible citizens. I must commend the youth of this church for their commitment and dedication,” he added.
Pastor Lim Gee Tiong shared that the primary objectives of the run were to foster family togetherness, encourage youth participation in healthy activities, and raise funds for the ongoing construction of the church building, which costs over RM70 million.
“We are grateful to the Sarawak government for its support, especially in assisting and approving many of our applications for the church building.
“We also want to bring blessings, share joy, and spread love throughout Kuching,” he added.
