KUCHING, Feb 03: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang says that a Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) flood mitigation drain could be one solution to solve flood and erosion issues for residents along Jalan Stakan.

He revealed that the project, which costs RM7 million, would be completed next year.

“The huge monsoon drain with a reinforced concrete retention wall should solve flood and erosion issues in that area,” he said.

“The infrastructure should help residents along Jalan Stakan as they have faced the problem for many years,” he added.

Lo, who also Batu Kitang assemblyman, told reporters this in reply to a complaint made by special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian, after witnessing the handing over of appointment letters to community leaders at a restaurant at 10th Mile Bazaar.

Kong had warned MPP and wrote a letter about the possibility of flash floods and erosion along Jalan Stakan after he visited a resident at Lot 68F who complained about flood waters rushing into the owner’s house.

“I have not received and seen the letter written by Kong yet, but MPP will get down to it to resolve the matter for that resident,” Lo said.

Earlier, he witnessed the handing over of an appointment letter to Kapitan Lim Eng Kok and the reappointment of four community leaders by the Sarawak administrative officer of Padawan, Julius Sapong.

He encouraged the community leaders to continue doing good work for the community they represented and not hinder government assistance.

“We need all your support, and if you have problems, go and seek assistance so that the government official will help you lighten that burden,” he said. — DayakDaily
