KUCHING: The construction of flyovers at Mile 4, 6, 7 and 10, Jalan Penrissen here is expected to complete on Oct 30, 2020.
The flyovers being built at a cost of about RM50 million, fall within the jurisdiction of Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), and are part of a package under Pan Borneo Highway.
PMC chairman Lo Khere Chiang, together with an adviser of Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and other senior staff, Lebuhraya Borneo Utara (LBU) project manager SSM Dahlim Mungkil, senior council staff and the contractors visited one of the sites at Mile 6 (near Kuching Sentral) yesterday.
“All four flyovers will be completed on Oct 30, 2020, and we are trying very hard to complete the project on time. The construction does not come without difficulties, but we are trying our best to minimise the inconveniences faced by motorists,” Lo said.
Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said the biggest ‘headache’ faced by the contractors was the underground water pipes, which are serving major industries in the city.
“We can’t shut them down because the pipes are serving major industries in Samajaya Free Industrial Zone, Demak Laut Free Industrial Zone and industries in Sejingkat.
“But, we are widening the road to minimise the inconveniences to motorists,” Lo said.
According to him, about 84,000 vehicles use the road stretches daily.
He said he even received phone calls and Whatsapp sometimes in the middle of the night complaining about the massive traffic jams and other inconveniences.
He thus appealed to the public to bear with them while waiting for the project to complete.
The four areas, he added, were already facing bad traffic congestion even before the construction of the flyovers started.
He said once the project is completed the traffic flow would be smoother.
