Lo’s bid to change record of his unparliamentary utterance denied
A GOVERNMENT backbencher yesterday claimed that the State Legislative Assembly’s (DUN) stenographer misquoted him in the Hansard during his debate speech on Wednesday.
Lo Khere Chiang (SUPP-Batu Kitang) denied having uttered ‘bullshit’ during the debate and told the House that “it is wrongly recorded”.
“Well, I did not mention bullshit,” he tried to explain to the Speaker of DUN Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar after Chiew Chin Sing (DAP-Tanjong Batu) moved a motion requesting Lo to retract the indecent word.
As soon as Lo indicated his denial, the chamber filled with some roar which prompted Asfia to rule: “Let him (Lo) explain.”
Instead of offering an explanation, Lo was heard requesting the august House to make an amendment to the Hansard from ‘bullshit’ to ‘rubbish’.
“Can we change the bullshit which was wrongly recorded to rubbish?”
The request again invited some loud utterance from members of the House.
Lo insisted: “No, I did not say bullshit. I’m a gentleman. I did not say bullshit.
“The typist (stenographer) has listened wrongly. I did not hear it. Well, just change it (bullshit) to rubbish.”
His insistence on the stenographer’s mistake prompted Asfia to jest: “You meant to say that a slip of the tongue is not the fault of the mic.”
To which, Lo responded: “Yes, you are right.”
Asfia refused to acknowledge Lo’s defence by making his ruling: “You withdraw. Withdraw.”
Even though the Speaker ruled that Lo had to withdraw the word, the assemblyman did not put on record that he would retract it.
After Asfia’s ruling, David Wong (DAP-Pelawan) who was granted the floor said “We are all gentlemen” and that if state assembly persons uttered a wrong word or statement, he or she would have to retract what was wrongly uttered.
Wong added that it had nothing to do with whether it was a slip of the tongue or the fault of the microphone.
