Knowledge, education key to changing life, mindset — Lo

Lo (left) presents an appreciation certificate to SMK Wira Penrissen teacher Phang Hui Kien, who is also the school’s public examination secretary for SPM. Looking on is co-curriculum senior assistant Juhari Pawi.
KUCHING: Knowledge and education are powerful tools that not only change people’s life but also their way of thinking, hence the need for teachers, students and parents to work together towards achieving a common goal.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who said this, pointed out that education has the ability to not only change and determine one’s future livelihood, but also chart the future of the nation.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. To destroy a nation, all you need is to destroy its education system. The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation.
“Parents cannot just leave everything to the teachers. It’s a joint effort between teachers, parents and students. Parental support and cooperation are equally important in order to ensure the children’s academic excellence,” he said when officiating at SMK Wira Penrissen’s student excellence award ceremony, here recently.
Recipients of the excellence award listen to Lo delivering his speech.
Lo said apart from nurturing good discipline in their children, parents need to also ensure necessary provisions such as tables, chairs, books and references are available at home to facilitate a better and favourable learning environment.
“Teachers, on the other hand, should always attempt to upgrade their skills and knowledge with the current teaching and learning techniques and technology,” he added.
He also congratulated SMK Wira Penrissen teachers and students for their good disciplinary reputation as well as achieving encouraging results in public examinations and co-curriculum activities despite facing challenges such as inadequate classrooms, tables and chairs due to the large student population.
Lo subsequently announced an allocation of RM2,000 to the school for the purchase of chairs in response to a request by senior assistant Kerine Gadep, adding he would also assist in the construction of an open multi-purpose hall in the school to accommodate the operation of the school’s various curriculum and co-curriculum activities.
Earlier, Kerine in his welcoming speech highlighted some of SMK Wira Penrissen’s physical needs such as classrooms, tables and chairs, as well as an open multi-purpose hall to accommodate the school’s 2,305 students.
He also mentioned the need to upgrade the teachers’ toilets as well as the overcrowded staffroom besides touching on the daily traffic congestion in the school compound.
Kerine presents a special award to Nur Natasha Bintang Mohammad Jad, who scored 9As in last year’s SPM examination.
SMK Wira Penrissen, built on a 30-acre land, is a double-session institution with 176 academic and non-academic staff.
Among those present at the ceremony were SMK Wira Penrissen parent-teacher association (PTA) chairman Pengiran Samsudine Pengiran Tambi; Shabini Saini who represented the Samarahan district education officer, PTA exco members, teachers, parents and students.

‘Big no to shipping of waste into Sarawak’

‘Big no to shipping of waste into Sarawak’

KUCHING: Sarawak government will not allow the state to become a dumping ground for developed countries, said to be bringing in their waste here on the pretext of undertaking ‘luxurious’ recycling industry worth RM30 billion.
Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian points out that Sarawak treasures its environment, and insists that developed countries must manage their own waste.
“We will not support (import of foreign waste for recycling industries) as our environment and our nature are princely! We must learn from the mistakes of the Western countries. Manage your own waste,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Dr Sim was asked to comment on reports about Malaysia taking in 754,000 tonnes of plastic waste from over 19 countries this year.
The information is based on data from the Department of National Solid Waste Management, which shows that the US is the top plastic waste exporter to Malaysia, followed by Japan and Britain.
Greenpeace Malaysia revealed this data in its ‘The Recycling Myth’ report uncovering regulation violations in the plastic waste disposal, following news surrounding illegal plastic waste recycling factories mushrooming in some parts of Peninsular Malaysia.
A quick check with the federal Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin has confirmed that a Kuching-based company is doing waste recycling of foreign waste, albeit in smaller quantities.
“Sarawak is also importing. Only one company – Unify Five Sdn Bhd, Kuching. Plant capacity very small, only 200 tonnes per month,” Zuraida wrote on a WhatsApp message.
Dr Sim, when informed about the existence of the industry in Sarawak, pledged to find out more about the issue.
“Will look into it as we should protect our environment,” he stressed.
Dr Sim also said he would bring the matter to the attention of his colleagues in the Sarawak cabinet.
“I will discuss with Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah (Ali Hasan) as environment is under his ministry,” he said.
In view of the 754,000 tonnes of plastic waste taken in from 19 countries this year – with US, Japan and Britain billed as the highest exporters – is Malaysia literally the ‘world’s rubbish bin’?
Malaysia Parliament has been told that plastic waste processing business is a RM30-billion industry that cannot be ignored.
Meanwhile, a national English daily reported that Kuala Langat residents, who are in the middle of the fight against over 40 illegal plastic recycling centres in the area, saying that this venture comes at the cost of their health.
“We are the ones bearing the environmental risk of this plastic waste,” said resident Pua Lay Peng.
“Even if we avoid the dumping grounds and install water filters, we cannot avoid the acrid smell in the air,” Pua said.
Kuala Langat folk said the illegal plastic recycling factories are producing solid waste while the water pollution has forced fish and prawn farms to stop operations.
They claimed that villagers are developing chronic respiratory diseases from the open burning of unrecyclable waste. These factories, mostly illegal facilities owned by China companies, mainly hire foreign workers.
Pua added that its environmental impact would reduce the value of property in the area, as well as affect local businesses.

KUCHING: The construction of flyovers at Mile 4, 6, 7 and 10, Jalan Penrissen here is expected to complete on Oct 30, 2020.
The flyovers being built at a cost of about RM50 million, fall within the jurisdiction of Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), and are part of a package under Pan Borneo Highway.
PMC chairman Lo Khere Chiang, together with an adviser of Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and other senior staff, Lebuhraya Borneo Utara (LBU) project manager SSM Dahlim Mungkil, senior council staff and the contractors visited one of the sites at Mile 6 (near Kuching Sentral) yesterday.
“All four flyovers will be completed on Oct 30, 2020, and we are trying very hard to complete the project on time. The construction does not come without difficulties, but we are trying our best to minimise the inconveniences faced by motorists,” Lo said.
Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said the biggest ‘headache’ faced by the contractors was the underground water pipes, which are serving major industries in the city.
“We can’t shut them down because the pipes are serving major industries in Samajaya Free Industrial Zone, Demak Laut Free Industrial Zone and industries in Sejingkat.
“But, we are widening the road to minimise the inconveniences to motorists,” Lo said.
According to him, about 84,000 vehicles use the road stretches daily.
He said he even received phone calls and Whatsapp sometimes in the middle of the night complaining about the massive traffic jams and other inconveniences.
He thus appealed to the public to bear with them while waiting for the project to complete.
The four areas, he added, were already facing bad traffic congestion even before the construction of the flyovers started.
He said once the project is completed the traffic flow would be smoother.

“The construction of the projects is not without difficulties and challenges, but we are trying our best to minimise the inconvenience faced by motorists,” Lo said after visiting the site together with staff of state Public Works Department (JKR), Lebuhraya Borneo Utara (LBU), the contractors and MPP staff today.

“This (underground water pipes) is a major challenge for us, but we are trying our best to widen the road to minimise inconvenience to motorists,” Lo asserted.

He urged the public to bear with the council and the contractors while waiting for the completion of the projects.

According to him, about 84,000 vehicles are using the stretch of road daily.

In noting that there was also traffic congestion in the areas before the construction of the flyovers, Lo said the projects upon completion, would result in proper traffic flow and ease congestion.

Lo: Sarawak based opposition party too

KUCHING: Sarawak should not only have a 100% Sarawak based ruling party but also a 100% Sarawakbased opposition party to better safeguard Sarawak’s interests, said SUPP assistant publicity and information secretary Lo Khere Chiang.

“This is to ensure transparency and fair governance,” he added. Parroting Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s statement almost word for word, Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, similarly stressed that only Sarawakians and Sarawakbased political parties, both the ruling and opposition parties, would be able to effectively protect and fight for Sarawak’s rights and interests.

In this context, he described state DAP chairman, who is also Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen’s remark saying the chief minister’s statement as a mere political trickery as nothing more than a show of arrogance.

“Just look at Pakatan Harapan. In almost every promise and agenda made, there was a Uturn like the oil and gas revenue of 20%, the return of 50% taxes collected, the return of education and health autonomy to Sarawak, the return of equal status of Sarawak and Sabah with Malaya, the refusal to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate, just to name a few.

“He (Chong) and the rest of the Sarawak MPs from Pakatan Harapan are now ( behaving) quiet like a mouse. Look at his (Chong’s) performance in the last six months. He dared not utter anything that will offend his Malayan masters,” he said.

Lo added that recently the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced a RM30bil dividend from Petronas but Sarawak was again left out. To add salt to the wound, Lo said that Dr Mahathir was reported as saying that Petronas did not feel the pinch with the RM30bil dividend taken out of its coffer.

Dr Mahathir was further quoted as saying; “30 billion ringgit is nothing to them (Petronas).” Lo said he would like to ask why Sarawak was never being given any share out of the special dividend when 30% of the country’s revenue from petroleum actually came from the state.

He went onto say that Malaya took 33 years to disburse a total of RM30b accumulative royalty from petroleum to Sarawak but it took Petronas just one single transaction to disburse RM30bil to Malaya.

Lo asked: “If PH is really as fair and transparent as they advocate, everything that Malaya gets, we in Sabah and Sarawak should get too. After all the promises PH made before the election, we are still getting a miserable 5% of the RM15b annually.

Where are the promises of equal status and fairness promised to Sarawak and Sabah?”

Asking Sarawakians to look at Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian’s recent predicament, Lo said it was a case of Malaya mistreating a Sarawakian and thus the need for a Sarawakbased party to understand and to take care of Sarawakians. “Even before Malaya gathers strength, Sarawak has already been sidelined,” he added.

80 pct of projects under MPP completed – Lo

Lo (centre) with Ahmad on his left holding the list of projects. Also seen are senior staff and councillors of MPP.
KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has completed 80 per cent of the 270 projects that it handles this year.
Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said one of the projects is under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) of six assemblymen and three members of Parliament whose constituencies are under the council’s jurisdiction.
He told reporters yesterday the total cost of the projects are more than RM30 million.
“For the council, we have a total of 270 projects for this year, where about 80 per cent have been completed and the projects include flood mitigation, football fields, futsal courts, community halls and roads under Malaysia Road Record Information System (Marris) and bus sheds, among others,” Lo told a press conference yesterday at MPP office after chairing MPP’s full council meeting.
Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, also said that the council was working hard to repair the culvert in Lorong 3, Jln Stapok which was damaged by serious erosion and was expected to complete in a month’s time depending on weather condition.
According to him, the three-metre wide culvert was quite seriously damaged due to bad erosion because of a nearby stream.
He said 50 to 60 houses were affected by the damaged culvert, and he was informed by the residents yesterday morning.
“We are trying our best to rectify the problem with the resources that we have. Remember that the council only has three engineers, six assistant engineers to look after our whole projects, but we are always trying our best,” he pointed out.
In this connection, he urged Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong to “mind her language” before saying something negative about the council.
He pointed out that Yong should look for development fund for the state and the council in particular, instead of uttering foul and sarcastic words about the council.
“What Yong has been saying about the council, that we, including myself, have been sleeping, is of no benefit to the council and the people.
“I urge Yong, being in the federal government, to help seek more funds, instead of making sarcastic and impolite comments on the council.
“I also urge Yong to increase the development fund and not reducing it,” he said, adding the fund for Marris for a kilometre of road is now RM27,500 instead of the usual RM30,000 per kilometre previously.
He further said Yong should “go back to school and learn mannerism or go back and sleep”.
He pointed out Pakatan Harapan (PH) during the election had promised “heaven and earth” but things were very different now.
Present at the conference were deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and other senior staff and councillors.

‘MPP to continue promoting Telaga Air as tourist draw’

‘MPP to continue promoting Telaga Air as tourist draw’

Ahmad flags off participants competing in the cycling competition.
KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will continue to play its role in promoting Telaga Air as a tourist destination under its jurisdiction.
Its deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said this is in view that Telaga Air has the potential to attract both local and international visitors.
“Telaga Air is quite strategic because it is located near the sea and therefore suitable for recreation, especially with its beautiful views and peaceful ambiance – making it ideal for visitors, particularly families, to spend the weekend.
“For those who are interested, there are also homestay accommodations provided here and they come packaged with deep-sea fishing activities,” he said when closing the Telaga Air Festival 2018 here yesterday.
Ahmad was representing Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is Pantai Damai assemblyman, at the event.
On the festival, Ahmad described it as a great way to promote Telaga Air as a tourist destination.
He said this is in line with the objective of introducing Kampung Telaga Air to local and foreign visitors who can see for themselves the activities that go on at a Malay fishing village situated on the outskirts of the city.
At the same time, he pointed out that it also promotes seafood eateries in the area, thus contributing to the income of the local community through the food and beverage business.
Earlier, Ahmad flagged off participants in the Telaga Air Nature Challenge and also witnessed several events held in conjunction with the festival such as sepak takraw competition, futsal competition, ‘poco-poco’ competition and children’s colouring competition.
Other activities that were held included kayak and power boat race, karaoke competition, fishing competition, and seafood-cooking competition.
